  1. Avid: Now Under New Management

    by , 02-11-2013 at 03:19 PM
I got the notice today about Louis Hernandez, Jr. taking the position of President and CEO of Avid. Gary Greenfield stepping down after only one year at the helm. Of course there is the spiel reassuring us Avid customers that the future is looking better than ever. Better service. Better company/consumer relationships. They're going to listen better.

Mmmmmhmmmm. That's all great. It makes me wonder though, why Greenfield stepped down. Is it because of the shareholders? Is it because ...

  3. RE: Where is the music industry going?

This is simply a reference post from The Lefsetz Letter which can be found here.

"I recorded for XXXXXX Records from 1968-1972. Later I did a few separate albums for them.

My last statement from them, which was 125 pages of gobbledegook says that I now owe them $80k and that I 'earned' $10k last year which of course they deducted from their figures to come up with the $80k deficit.

In my entire career with them I have never gotten more than $1k or ...

  4. Quality Gear

    by , 08-05-2011 at 12:25 PM
I have none. Seriously. I am well below the level of a serious hack.

Just been thinking lately about the gear available and the quality. I'm not saying there aren't quality manufacturers out there. There are a few and many of them advertise on this site. The thing is, there are so many more companies producing trash out there.

I was watching a video of Santana doing Soul Sacrifice . This one:

  5. Have you seen this guitar?

    by , 06-23-2011 at 09:03 PM
Just posting this because a local musician here has lost his livelihood. A fully customized 1953 Gibson Les Paul. I'm sure some crackhead has it. I doubt they would be able to sell it above the 49th parallel, so if anybody down south happens to see this guitar please notify the police or contact Maurice. Here's the Craigslist ad:

  6. Music Promotion and Social Media

    by , 05-07-2011 at 04:39 PM
I went to a short presentation today regarding the use of social media to promote your band.

The host was our local Chris Brandt . Previously of Music BC.

There was a lot to be said, twitter was mentioned along with facebook, youtube, wikipedia.

The core idea was that you need to promote yourself in as many places as possible in order to gain the attention of passersby. Nothing really new here I suppose. It's common sense but sometimes we need someone ...

  7. The Frustration

    by , 04-27-2011 at 03:14 PM
It seems unavoidable. I'm sure I've blogged on this subject before but here I go again.

It frustrates me to no end that people go and download illegal software and then come to sites like this to ask for advice on how to use it. I know for a fact that they get a PDF manual with their wares. All my audio software automatically installs the PDF. It's there in full. You can read it at your leisure and even search specific topics. So, it's not even a matter of not having the resources. ...

Where are we going? I wonder how anyone could possibly make money in the music industry these days. It seems someone is making money. How are the big boys surviving? It's something that's just picking at my brain. Are they actually selling mp3s? It's mind boggling. Torrents aren't going away.

There are two genres that are maintaining any kind of CD sales. Country and Metal. The rest of the people seem be reliant on mp3s. That doesn't really leave much room for sales. Most people would ...

  9. Just for the Helluvit. ADL600

    by , 01-31-2011 at 01:43 PM
I don't care if I'm past the deadline. I did this just for fun. Last minute. I woke up this morning and decided I had to do something. So after dropping the kids off at school I ended up with this monstrosity. I probably don't deserve an ADL600 but I'm posting this schlep anyway. My apologies ahead of time. A little bit of Zappa-esque goofing for you. The lyrics were written on the fly as was the music really. Please excuse the fact that I put little to no thought into this.

  10. NIMBUS: real world recording school?

    by , 12-12-2010 at 05:51 PM
I finally found time to drop by Nimbus. They sent out an invite to an open house for the school that they run there. This is a working studio mind you. Bands go there to record. Recently Lillix finished Tigerlily there. Garth Richardson was at the door to greet guests. Bob Ezrin wasn't about or if he was, I didn't get to meet him. Seeing Kevin again was really cool. This is a guy who is just made for inspiring people.

The thing about these guys and all of the staff there that stood ...
