  1. Decisions Decisions

    by , 10-29-2010 at 09:49 AM
I recently got in contact with an old mentor. Not only is he a knowledgeable guy, he's generally a nice guy too. The kind of guy that takes the time to work things out with you. The kind of guy that tells you your are being an ass when you are being an ass. Turns out he's now at Nimbus studios. Yeah, there's a ton of studios out there. This one happens to have Garth Richardson at the helm. So I was invited to come out and see the facilities. I have yet to take him up on this offer.

  2. Johnny Winter and David Gogo at Centenial Theater.

    by , 09-17-2010 at 09:18 PM
So I went to see Johnny Winter last night at the Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver. A friend of mine just called me the day before and said "Hey, wanna see Johnny Winter Thursday night?" Uh.......YEAH! It was a great show but I'll get back to that.

What struck me was the opening act.

    David Gogo:
I'm not a fan of David Gogo. Actually, I was expecting to ho hum him when I heard he was opening. I think I heard a few of his electric tracks in the late ...

  3. More AVID

    by , 09-12-2010 at 07:32 PM
What the? What is with AVID? I just caught wind that AVID are releasing a new MBOX3 that supports USB 2.0. USB 2.0! That's a big deal? What's new about that? USB 2.0 has been out for years now and many other companies have already adopted it. Some even using it for up to 8 channels of simultaneous input(albeit sketchy). So what's the deal? More inputs? Nope. Better preamps? Not likely. New lower price for the weak interface that it is? Unheard of!

What a joke! It's not even catch up ...

    Firsts

I remember the very first guitar I ever owned. It was a Harmony H15 Bobcat. Built in 1963. This was no high end guitar. No sir. It was a cheap old thing that was sold out of a Sears catalogue. Yup. Sears guitars. Is there anything they don't sell? This beauty came with a Silvertone amplifier. All five watts of it.

The thing that truly sucked about this guitar ...

  5. Completely off topic. Just a rant about Disney Movies. Particularly The Bee Movie.

    by , 08-05-2010 at 10:07 PM
I'm a big fan of animated movies. I love Pixar and some of Disney's movies.

This may sound a little cuckoo I'm sure but I personally think that many of these movies are social commentaries in disguise.

Take for example Toy Story. Here's a movie about taking advantage of the time you have with your children. From a toy's point of view but I think it's pretty obvious that this movie is for the parents. Yes the kids love you. Admire you. Think the world of you for a while. ...

  6. What's going on with Pro Audio?

    by , 07-31-2010 at 09:06 PM
I took some time to head down to Tom Lee Music on Granville street here in downtown Vancouver. They had advertised a new "Next Level" learning center. Let me be clear on this. I'm not an employee of Tom Lee nor am I trying to spam this forum. I merely wanted to make some observations as I think this trend could adversely affect, if it has not already, the pro audio community as a whole.

It kind of feels a bit like karma. I remember making a comment on "drumming up more business" , ...

  7. Learning Sonar

    by , 06-17-2010 at 11:10 PM
I am so grateful to have won Sonar but I am a total newb when it comes to this software. I tried the demo version but to be honest, I had trouble navigating the routing. Since it’s all new to me I thought I’d document the basics as I do setup, simple audio and midi recording, editing and eventually mix down.

You’ll have to put up with my mediocre musicianship and sub par singing ability. Forgive me. I have a song in mind that I’ve been wanting to cover with a bit more edge. It’ll ...
  8. Listen with your ears.

    by , 05-20-2010 at 09:40 AM
Listen with your ears? It seems like a stupid thing to say.

When I was a kid, I would lose things all the time. So, like any kid, I'd yell from my bedroom: "Hey mom! Where's my......?". The response was always the same. "Look with your eyes! Not with your mouth!".

Lo and behold! Mom was always right. I was always too lazy to just hunt for my stuff when it wasn't where I last looked.

Somehow I feel like that is what's happening with music ...

  9. Sonar Piquing my interest.

    by , 05-12-2010 at 03:31 PM
Like I need another DAW. I've used just about every DAW out there with the exception of Digital Performer. I think my bro left a Mac around somewhere with an early version of DP. I'm talking about on the little 7" screen iMac. The ORIGINAL iMac. It was obsolete when he "forgot" it at the house 15 years ago.

I was an avid Cubase user for a long time. It's what I learned on from early in my exploration of digital audio. At the time it was only midi. I had used early versions ...

  10. If you've ever wondered whether or not to go to engineering "School"...

    I stumbled upon this today.

It's not just a reflection of music "Education" but education as a whole in North America. I think it's worth our attention.

Watch the excerpt "Educational Entrepreneur" .

I find it disturbing in the least. At worst it's offensive and immoral. He is obviously taking advantage of ...
