There was a time when people would practice for hours and hours. They'd overcome feelings of inadequacy, fumble over techniques that seemed impossible, striving slowly but surely to overcome those seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Dexterity, theory and even their own ability to project a personal ideal were challenges unto themselves. Beyond that they needed to extend themselves beyond the norm. To establish themselves apart from everyone else as something unique. A talent set apart from the ...
What's going on with Digidesign? I received an email telling me that the Digidesign name will be resigned. ProTools, M-Audio, Sibelius will all be under the one name: AVID. Is this a good move? I don't know. It's good to see that the company is trying to streamline. This is the nature of our economy. My employer has done some streamlining of it's own in the recent months. I've lost some privileges but I haven't lost my job. So is streamlining going to help ProTools? We can only pray. ...
Never have I seen a more useless piece of equipment. Why, now even your dog can "make music". http://www.global.yamaha.com/tenori-on/demo/ Why even have musicians? Who needs talent? As long as you look good and can schmooze your way into a seat at the front of a club, you can be a.....person who presses play. I mean deejay. I just cannot fathom how or why anyone would pay to watch someone engage one of these devices. Seriously, people pay to ...

Lately I’ve been getting these emails offering an online “education” in audio production. Yes for a mere $40,000 I can take part in a two year program that will result in a certificate in audio production. Or, if I want to I could enrol to learn the DJ arts! Whoda thunk being an audio professional could be so easy? What ever happened to mentoring? Who's going to critique my work? What's to stop me from cheating or out-rightly plagiarizing someone else' work? It doesn’t ...

Ugh. I love spending money. I went to the local Long and McQuade to look at interfaces. There were several deals, the economy being the way it is. There was an Nuendo/RME Multiface/PCI combo that was selling for $400.00, two Tascam Firwire 1804s for $300 each. I don't know anything about the FW1804 but it's Tascam. I'm not a huge fan. The thing that drew my attention was that the design is by Frontier Designs. That name does have a good reputation. Unfortunately nobody there knew anything ...

I'm sick of it. Really! Why do people ask for advice and then do everything in their power to avoid it? If you want to go spend your money on that Bumstinger mixer, go right ahead. Why are you asking for someone else's approval? You have to appreciate the time people take to gather information for you. Some of which you could probably google yourself. For that matter, a little reading goes a long way. And, the fact is I learn something new here every day. There is so much information ...
I will be honest, my gear is crap. I mean garbage. I record in an untreated room with odd noises in the background. The furnace is noisy. There's a clock ticking in the background. It's a horrible mess. I don't have a single mic that I'm proud of. Sure I've used some expensive mics but none of them were my own. It's been years since I've spent time in a decent studio. I've been in lots of budget studios and one or two really nice project studios but nothing in the realm of a multimillion ...
Honestly, I'm not even sure I know what a blog is. For better or worse, I'm just taking the opportunity to unload my mind somewhere. So here it goes. It's my opinion so take it all with a grain of salt. There's no worse feeling.... ..than knowing your most vulnerable aspects are exposed for all to see. Ever have dream that you are out on the street (far away enough from home that you wouldn't just be able to run inside), you're in your underwear and everyone whom you value ...
