Running a Studio

Having a good studio of both facility and gear is all fine and well... but you gotta make the thing run as a business, right?

  1. Did I Mention Insurance?

We've all heard about the 1 million dollar cup of coffee lawsuit that McDonalds lost. Granted, there were extenuating circumstances that compelled the jury to award that $1,000,000... but my point is... the jury awarded a punitive amount of money to the plaintiff.

Can YOU afford to be sued?

My guess is that you probably can't.

A client, or even a friend, can trip over a mic cable, someone could spill a glass of liquid and slip, maybe you didn't attach a sheet ...

OK... So, now we've got a phone, internet access and we can process a payment...

IF you ever get a paying client in the door, that is.

Unless you're 1 in a million odds of winning the lottery come through and you can pay folks to come record in your shop... til the money runs out, anyway... you're gonna wanna try to actually find clients.

Clients are commonly referred to as punters, schmucks and a whole host of things that are as equally offensive. If you ...

In searching for a credit card processing service, I've decided to put out the shark repellent, and go with my bank.

They offer the service as a pass through and actually have a much cleaner system.

I can do everything web based and will even get a small USB terminal that ties in as an actual card terminal.

The rates aren't the cheapest, but they certainly aren't the most expensive. There's no contract and no penalties, and the cost of the machine is cheaper ...

Communication is slightly important to a business, right?

Be careful when shopping for your communication packages. You can, and WILL go broke, if you aren't careful with picking your services.

This is a bit of an open ended question actually, but do you really need the 3 phone lines, a high end multi-line phone system and a fax line that your telco provider is trying to hustle you into?

Maybe you do, maybe you don't... you need to figure it out BEFORE committing. ...

    One thing...

    One important thing....

One VERY important thing you might want to consider is getting paid!

So... are you gonna take cash only? Do you wanna risk bad checks? What about Visa/Master Card/Discovery, etc?

Whether you want to deal with it or not, when you're in business, the bottom line is the bottom line.

I'm looking at all the options for accepting whatever methods I can to get paid, and it will drive you NUTS with all ...

  6. What to do... Make a To Do List

After the saga began, I wanted to shoot myself for actually being insane enough to start building a studio...

Now that she's built... I know what a missed opportunity it was!

To build a studio or to BUILD a studio was the question indeed. Lunatic that I am... I BUILT a studio.

Now to actually make it all function as a real studio without being committed to the loonie-bin/nut-hut.

There's everything from utilities to marketing to advertising to ...
