What's Wrong With the Youth of Today?

I know, I know, the battle cry of every generation. The jazz age, the beatniks, the hippies, the “ME” generation, etc… All had their problems with the older generation, but they’ve also had an incredible positive side to their culture (at least on the artistic side) I guess I’m just struggling with that aspect of the current group. As a parent of 2 students who will soon be in college and as a high school teacher for the past 20 years I’m pretty familiar with this group from several perspectives and I still can’t get a handle on them.
I’ve been reading a bunch and there is a lot of information that indicates that this generation is actually physically different in the way it processes information. Instead of left to right, top to bottom scanning this page you’re reading, they would look for pictures and images, colors and shapes in a quick scan. (kinda like you scan a video game to look for danger) In fact their least favorite means of taking in information is via the process you are using right now. They will choose virtually any other source before this boring one using black print on a white background
Even though they can be very caring and considerate (I work with great kids for the most part) they are still very self focused. It is the very rare student who thinks outside of the box or even pushes to learn beyond what is assigned and/or necessary. They are content to be in constant communication via facebook, texting, twitter, etc at the expense of gaining knowledge of the outside world at all. These are the best and the brightest mind you – most score well into the 30’s on the ACT.
If their world is closed off by choice how will the deep thinkers, explorers, creators, developers and artists be inspired?
What will a generation like this eventually create as art and music? I realize its not this type of kid that tends to be the cutting edge type that sets trends in style and popular culture elements like pop music, but it is usually the very bright that wish to be challenged by new art, music and cultures. What will inspire them and how will that inspiration manifest itself? No answers here, I just hope that they might want to learn more about the world around them for their sake.
