Omni-directional mic for background/far voices Scenario: We have around 20-30 people meeting in a normal house living room and we would like to record the discussions. So we would need a microphone that can be placed in the center and that can record voices of people 15-20 feet away - more like being able to record all the background noises. We tried 2 microphones till now (pretty much we just chose some random ones from Walmart) and the problem is that they do not record voices of people who are not withing 5 ft or so of the mic.
We are looking for something under $100 if possible and the quality is not that important, as long as the it can be understood what everyone says.
So anyone has any recommendations for a mic that could fit our needs?

Studio Projects B3...Look used and maybe at $100....New they're around $140. Three patterns. You'll have to have phantom power but this can be had in a single unit very cheaply.
You did not mention what you're recording to....this unit may have a preamp and phantom power already. If its a small mixer most likely it does.

We are going to connect the microphone to a PC to record it, so no small mixer.
This might be a problem then.
What are you using to connect the mic to the computer? Are you just plugging it in to the jack on the back? (Into your sound card??)
If this is the case, you're not getting enough gain since you're likely having to use a dynamic mic (or low gain fixed polarity) computer type microphone.
For that matter, you might want to consider one of the newer USB style microphones - something like the Blue Snowball or similar.
DD's solution is better and more elegant, but may require additional hardware.

Check out the Audio Technica ATR series. There's a couple of quite directional mics that could help you out there. (ATR 25, ATR 55 - both mics are useable for video applications and I've had reasonable results with both.)
