Well, these aren't exactly 1073's. And $2600 US is rather stiff for these. Brent has made a lot of these from 1272's. He is a good guide to deal with. And he works mostly from real Neve Stuff and not imitation stuff. I'm not cloning around here. Maybe we are talking about different currency? And since you already have a pair of the world's best microphone preamp's, what exactly are you upgrading to? Say you want better converters and crappy preamps? Or am I not quite understanding you correctly? And so you would like a single microphone preamp? And $1000? I might consider trading you a 3115 for your rig? You'll need a power supply but then you'll have basically a 1073 with AB outputs Around those beautiful ferrite core inductor equalizer just like the 1073. And this is the real deal. You don't get any cash. So then you are in the same place again and with one less channel of preamp. Guess that won't work? Mackie Onyx is probably what you would do better with? It sounds way better than that old stuff. If you believe that? I have a nice bridge I could sell you from the mouth of some dental patient.

I have no bridge as I am already mental

I believe you actually will discover that the Mackie Onyx does in fact have line level inputs. Every kind of converter input has some type of buffer amplifier at its front end. So Brent has changed his product line since the last time I bothered to look at his site. Since I last sold him $7000 worth of API 312 microphone preamps. And so you don't anticipate ever needing to record anything in stereo I suppose? Since you only need one preamp. But of course you indicated a desire to have a multichannel input capability as well. Good call. And the Onyx is perfectly fine for that application. So you two obviously put a lot of thought into this since you only needed one and purchased two? So your recordings don't sound good since the Mackie is no good, right? Wrong. It's not the Mackie's fault. It's not because it has preamps you don't want. It's because you don't know how to set your levels properly. Gain staging could well be considered an art in and by itself. If you want a good converter try the API. There, then you have the best of both worlds NEVE & API. All the color with all the art worth reproducing. So I suppose you've already learned how to make really good recordings on crappy equipment? Of course you have. And that's the reason for stepping up. I couldn't agree more.

I dont know which Mackie Onyx you're using but they all seem to have line level inputs and these most certainly do not go through the mic preamps.
