Hi folks
I have just bought one MXL V67G. The manual says that is suitable for overheads, vocals and guitars. it is a very cheap mic, so I really do not believe it would do fine in such a variety of different sources/ rec situations.
Anyway, is it better than C300B's and GT55's?
I will be testing for myself in the following months.
So what have been your impresisons and where have you guys achived more success with it?

personally after hearing an assortment of mics, I very much dislike the sounds of all the MXL mics they sound cheap to my ears, ebrasive, overhyped. I'm not talking about a price point comparrison I'm just talking about quality. For instance i really like octava mc012 with the omni capsules and those are $90.

That's a little too short through the corner, we say in Holland.
The MXL V77 is a very nice sounding mic. IMHO it sounds close to the big expensive Neumann mics and even better than the TLM103.

I bought 5 MXL 990's about a month ago, and they're anything other than abrasive and overhyped (if you mean sound-wise). I've actually been pretty surprised about how smooth they are in the top-end. I've only used them on kick and toms, but I think they sound great. Of course, each one sounds different. ;) But overall, for 60 bucks including shockmount, you'd be hard pressed to beat it. My complaint would be more on the side of not enough "air" in the top-end and that they expose the crappiness of my pre-amps by being so hot. ;) Time for some pads or convince my wife that we simply cannot live without a JLM TMP-8. HAH!

Yeah, money isn't everything. But don't get me wrong, on some voices the C4000b is da bomb. One female vocalist that came here didn't sound great on anything until I put the C4000b in front of her -- WOW, all of a sudden her voice came to life.
I just finished a ton of guitar tracks using the C4000b and a 57 or the C4000b and a 421 to mic Marshall and Mesa-Boogie amps. Sounded great. A lot like a C414.
But on the same project I used the MXL V67 on all the lead vocals. I ran it through a Peavey VMP-2 tube preamp and into the Fatso. AHHH!

Well it really wasn't a quailty test but i tried out there V67G and V77S at Guitar Center using a Universal Audio m-610 tube pre which I own a know very well, recorded into there PTLE rig. The UA was set at -10gn, its cleanest setting. We tried these mics up against a AKG C414ULS-B and a Nueman TLM-103, not as familair with the 103 but I'm very fimilair with the 414. We recorded them and the MXL sounded good when singing into it from 6 inches away, but when my friend who I record rapped into it (hes an agressive loud rapper, that knows how to project from taking voice/ theatre classes) the V67G sounded brittle in the top end
, very simbilant and overly harmonicly distorted, we weren't overloading the pre input either. The V77s worked better for him, though the mids sounded muddy but the top end problem with the V67G wasn't there. I wasn't impressed with the TLM-103 either, it sounded great but not as full as the 414. I guess i really need to take more time with these mics to critisize them, in my studio. But what I previosly posted was exactlly my first impressions with them, also just to add my friends whole hiphop album was recorded usind a MXL 2001 through a mackie pre on the 1604VLZ board, those vocals sounded so thin, and brittle, with an anoying top end that is very harsh, no fullness, and muddy mids, the vocals got so harsh that the song can't be played at loud levels, as for the rest of the album, I really dislike the vocal sound, the same culprits in everysong eccept on that was recorded using a 4033, which in that case I wasn't impressed but I wasn't annoyed.

Im not a fan of the V67{I have two}.However the 69 is pretty good for the cash..To me its a better,clearer sound than the 67..Reminicent of the AT 4060 in a way..but not as..hummmmm..lets say nice and will "fold" much more quickly

I have a V69 and a V77 in the studio for testing. So far I like the 77 most because it has the "German Sound". It comes really close to the M149 (which sounds better :eek: )
But last saturday we recorded male vocals both with the M149 and a SP B1 next to it. Three out of four bandmembers couldn't hear any difference.
Which is of course subjective, for the M149 sounds a lot better, but not 40 times better, like it's cost.

IMHO the 69 sounds a bit hyped, not as neutral as the V77.

I bet I can make any mic sound good with a littler analyzing from my scope to find out were it peaks and or drops and the spacial set up ......with my eq I can do it....v67 69 or whatever....all I need is a great river pre-amp.....check out the listening room plus go test that baby...everything sounds good an that thing...woooweee its da bomb...now...later I gotta go shovel some more snow to get that....any one wants there roof waxed....I'll do anything........the mxl69 are really good for the money reallly good for the money...quality wise I do not know ...but the 69 is 69er dudes is thats the only position you like...me personally Iam on a variety of positions so I say get the 69...get the c1....get the ntk....get all the cheap mics under 1000 dollars one of the got to sound good for all the diffrent type of individuals that come in the studio
I liked my V67 pretty well, before I sold it, but one thing that
I liked my V67 pretty well, before I sold it, but one thing that bothered me about it is that, if I had to really squash a vocal, the sibilance would almost slice me in half. I have not this problem with any other vocal mic I've used (Oktava ML52, Rode NTK, Studio Projects B3, BLUE Ball).
That's not to say it was a bad mic though. I recorded an entire album with it.

I love this mic, very useful and often beats out mics costing many times more on lead vocal.
I have no U47's or 67's here, but NTK and C4000b are often not as nice as the V67.
Great deal for the money.
