I bought a couple of these and I am truly shocked at how beautiful they sound.
They do not make matched pairs, but for this money, who cares!
I also own a pair of Studio Project C4's.

I just bought a pair of TF27's the other day. I tested them out a bit but I haven?t had a proper chance to record with them. My immediate pan is to use them for both recording acoustic guitar and a choir.
Any thoughts on how they will do on these applications? They may also become drum overheads later on.
What did you pay for them? I got mine at Digital Village for £40 a piece.
Cheers for your input,
Simon.

josephson c42's are about $430 ea and the charge about $100 extra if you get a matched pair- ($950) is that worth a hundred bucs? you would think that in this price range they would be closely matched anyway- I understand Neumann km184 are not sold in "matched" pairs but 2 of them are so close anyway because of QC so...

To my ears, the Neumann KM184 and Josephson C42 are very different sounding microphones. To say one is the "clear winner" over the other, apparently based on price alone, does not take into account the numerous other factors involved in selecting a microphone. If price alone is all that matters, then an AKG C1000s is the "clear winner" over a DPA 4011.

I had a chance to use the non-matched pair for a few weeks on loan from a dealer until the matched pair came in. I only used them for drum O/H but I'll be damned if I could hear a difference... they both sounded great. But take that with a grain of salt, as I am a drummer. 8)

I am not a fan of the KM184 at all. I had a pair for 3 years and almost always replaced what we recorded with them with something else. My Earthworks mics were so much more usefull and sounded so much better on almost everything that I finally sold the KM184s.
The KM184s were very very hyped in the high end, nothing even close to accurate and had a spitty kind of distorted high end (kind of like a U87ai).
I am not a Neumann mic fan.

My point indeed- notice that the mics are sold in sequential numbers but nowhere it was claimed they were a matched pair- I think Neumann doesn't do that as they claim that their qc is good enough where you don't need a "match"

You can find a matched pair of 012's at http:// for $300. Im thinking about either those or the NT5's.

I've used all of the above and just about every other budget small condenser made. I prefer the Oktava MK012s as they perform the best across a lot of settings including drum overheads and acoustic guitar. If you are going to be exclusively using them for drum overheads, then it'd be hard to beat the Studio Projects C4s in their price range.
