Painstaking attention to detail... Designed by David Royer, well known for his Royer Ribbon microphones, A Mojave microphone's journey begins and ends in Burbank, CA. US made Jensen transformers, NOS (new old stock) tubes, and quality FETS's are shipped offshore and mated to capsules. At Mojave it is a given that no sacrifices are made in the critical signal path electronics. This hybrid of domestic and overseas manufacturing allows us to make superb microphones that are affordable without compromise. (more) ...

Like many of the best classic ribbon mics, the R-121 has a figure-8 pattern, output level comparable to a dynamic mic, and a warm, realistic tone and flat frequency response. But that's where the similarities end. By using advanced materials and a blend of cutting edge and old-school, hand-build construction techniques, the R-121 ribbon mic is an extremely versatile and user-friendly ribbon mic that can stand up to the most demanding tasks.

    Royer R-121 Ribbon Microphone

Released in 1998, the award-winning R-121 is our flagship microphone; the world's first radically reengineered ribbon microphone and the model that reintroduced ribbon mics to engineers around the world. We did away with the large, heavy, fragile "classic" approach to ribbon microphones and went in a completely new direction. The R-121 gives all of the warmth and natural sound that experienced engineers have long turned to ribbon mics for, but in a compact, light-weight, high output and tough-as-nails package that was unheard of in a ribbon mic before the R-121. In its 10+ years in the market, thousands of R-121's have been sold around the world and it's well established as a standard for tracking electric guitar and brass. The R-121 redefined ribbon microphones so completely that Recording Magazine wrote "...the Royer R-121 is destined to become one of the classic microphones of the 21st century."
Like many of the best classic ribbon mics, the R-121 has a figure-8 pattern, output level comparable to a dynamic mic, and a warm, realistic tone and flat frequency response. Cranked up electric guitars, close up brass, drums - you name it, the R-121 will help you record it with realism you have to hear to believe.
We build the R-121 solid enough to give it a lifetime warranty. We expect you to own it for as long as you record, and we'll stand behind it the whole way.

    Patented Offset Ribbon Technology
The R-121's proprietary offset ribbon transducer (Patent # 6,434,252) is the first of its kind, positioning the ribbon element closer to the front (logo) side of the microphone. This arrangement gives the ribbon more room to move within the prime magnetic field while maintaining full frequency response during high SPL recordings. It's an integral piece of the magic of all Royer R-series microphones.

"The Black Knight" uses a large dual-diaphragm, side-terminated, condenser capsule. It possesses a natural musical sound with transparent highs, smooth midrange with a subtle vocal presence bump at 3kHz, flat low-frequency response and a unidirectional cardioid polar pattern. The acoustically open transducer head minimizes internal resonances and reflections so that even the most minute sound details are authentically captured. An integrated swivel-mount allows for fast and handy positioning of the transducer head. The internal phantom powered preamplifier's Class 'A' fully discrete transformerless circuit provides very high output, flat audio-response and ultra-low distortion and noise. Gold-plated contacts on the output connector provide a noise-free connection. "[The Black Knight] sounded great on anything I put it in front of. The swiveling head is the most convenient feature I've ever seen on a mic."

    The Studio Files
"The Black Knight" microphone is also available in matched stereo or surround sets as a special order.
Applications: "The Black Knight" microphone has a very detailed and uncolored sound. It is perfect for overheads, acoustic guitar and many other instruments as well as vocal applications. The swivel mount head allows for easy minor re-positioning, without adjusting the stand. It is an excellent solution for broadcast studios, film and vid ...

SPL DrumXchanger: Beta version makes debut at Musikmesse SPL's new software tool looks very promising, specially considering that the German manufacturer has an ace under the sleeve: their proprietary Transient Designer technology. By inventing level-independent dynamic processing in the 1990's, SPL provided the foundation for all transient processing tools. They have once again resorted to this proven and tested technology to develop their latest software tool: the DrumXchanger, a plug-in that can replace drum sounds in multitrack sessions irrespective of their level. According to SPL, it works in real time and replaces samples phase-accurately in the original signal. DrumXchanger uses the Transient Designer technology for drum hit recognition rather than sound creation. Hence, all drum hits, including the faintest ghost notes, are faithfully recognized regardless of their dynamic level. The samples can be mixed with the original sound and there is also a ducking function available, which only reduces the level of the original drum hit itself without affecting the ambience around it. ...

Having an SPL modular rack system had never been so feasible: In addition to the much-praised, 19-inch eight-module frame available already, the German manufacturer introduces now a brand new four-module rack system, as well as a Dual-Band De-Esser to complete its range of modules available.
RackPack 4 RackPack 4 is a compact and portable module frame that can fit up to four SPL RackPack modules and supply them with power. The sturdy rubber feet and handle make it easy to move around, while the especially manufactured fitting system allow it to sit comfortably in a 19-inch rack.

Contributing to the ongoing debate about M/S Mastering, SPL introduces a new powerful analog tool that can manage M/S signal separation and integrate external processors seamlessly – The M/S Master. World Premiere at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt. The M/S Master allows a fully adjustable separation of stereo L/R signals (X/Y) into middle/side signals (M/S). M/S separation and positioning, as well as the stereo image, are defined by the Balance and Level knobs, while a switchable frequency filter for the Side signal controls the lower frequencies and the room ambience. One of the main features of the M/S Master is that it can integrate external processors via switchable inserts. Thus, outboard gear can be easily integrated into the X/Y or M/S mix with a single button and without the need of any cabling. These processing possibilities make the M/S Master an essential tool in mastering environments. ...
