Finally broke down...Linux Well, after a few years of avoiding Linux, I finally took the plunge (again). Well, maybe more of wading in the shallow end at this point. I tried installing it a few years ago, but quickly decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Windows was working just fine for me at the time...these days, it seems that windows is more trouble than it's worth, though...So, here I am.
I have to say, so far it's been alot more painless than I thought it would be. Linux has really come a long way. Installed it, rebooted and everything works right out of the starting gate. I can't complain about that. It'll probably take me a little while to learn my way around, but as long as I can do basic stuff while I learn it, I shouldn't have to much problem.
I just found out that this SuSe distribution came packaged with Ardour, too. So, hopefully I'll be able to mess around with it, without to much trouble. Nice bonus since I'm not quite ready to tackle installing software on this thing, yet.
Anyway, so far my fears about Linux have been put to rest and I'm excited to be using it.

Re: Finally broke down...Linux Audacity is a good app for what it does. I use it on my Mac OS X box. It does, however, have the current limitation that any wave you work on is loaded fully into memory. I hear that disk streaming is being worked on, though.
As for Ardour, I'm on both of the mailing lists (for developers and for users) and progress is definitely being made. I'm still not sure if I want to use Ardour for my DAW though, as I still need to buy a good A/D unit, and if I get that MOTU 828mkII it comes with Audiodesk, which will do everything I need on my Mac.
On the other hand, there is something appealing about being able to say "This album was produced with nothing but Open Source software." A political statement, yes, but an important one in my mind, as I am an experienced Linux user.

Re: Finally broke down...Linux Yea...have you checked out Magnatune? It's an online record company founded upon the same ideals as the open source software movement. Some good music on there. It'll be interesting to see how it works out. Magnatune :c:

Re: Finally broke down...Linux I just recently built a new box and decided to investigate Linux. Why not? All the cool kids are doing it.
