    Default Editing Midi Drum Tracks

    Hey guys,

I am planning to record a drummer playing an electric drum kit through Midi and then use VST effects to enhance the sound.

I am just wondering it is possible to use VST effects on Midi tracks... or are VST effect only a feature for audio???

I know this may be a stupid question however i have done Very Very little work editing Midi in the past... slowly getting into it.

    Btw. I am using Cubase.

    Cheers,
    Spiro

Nope though you can use VSTi's such as purchasing Drumkit from hell or BFM.

I would make a mix of the drummer's sounds on the sound module and then take a stereo mix from the outputs.

the purpose of running through midi would be have the option of quantizing and also look at options of using sound replacement tools such as Drumagog ect.

if you send your midi tracks to an vstinstrument, like ezdrummer, battery or any other software synth or sampler, you can put vst effects on the inserts or sends of your instrument track.

I agree with ouzo77. You can apply all of the same effects to a vst instrument using the inserts in the mixer section, I've done it. Same way you would on an audio track... on the channel strip. I'm not sure about Cubase, but I use Nuendo and I have no problems. Short answer: Yes, do it from the mixer section.

If you are talking about printing them within the project (applying them permanantly before mixdown), then you'd have to route the MIDI to an audio track using Senderella, or export the track and re-import... blah, blah, blah. Hope this helps.

P.S. (As a joke, you should make the drummer's snare trigger a sample of a cow mooing and tell him it's what all of the hip new bands are doing now.)
