Hi Group,

I just found a "clone" of my complete gyraf webpage:

http://mirrors.waglo.com/gyraf.dk/

I haven't got the slightest idea about why this is done - or by who. Should I be worried? The main server seems to be in French - leaving me kinda confused..

Any ideas?

This info may be completely wrong, but I just asked a friend who works in I.T what the down-side could be. In his opinion there are a lot of "freaky" people on the 'web, and his suspicion is that you have a big fan! It still costs the French guy to host your site, if the contact details are the correct Gyraf Danish ones what is in it for the French person?

My friend thinks you should be flattered, you know what they say about imitation...

But we could be completely wrong, so get some more opinion.

Cheers,
Justin

Mirroring is usually done to "spread the load" with very popular web sites, or sites that host very large files (Linux distributions are a good example). In this case, though, it probably has more to do with the lack of permanence that information on the web tends to have.

When you publish a book, it becomes a reasonably permanent record of the information you present within it. The web, on the other hand, has information that comes and goes like the wind. Most of it is of little importance, but sometimes sites with really good information (like say, umm, gyraf.dk :D ) appear and, given the nature of the web, some people may be afraid of losing that information. Thus the mirroring, or perhaps "archiving" is a better word.

For a really, really thorough archive of the web going back to about 1995, check out the Wayback Machine: http://www.archive.org/ . Now these guys are gods in the IT world.

There are a few legit and good reasons to mirror.

Either way you should have been contacted first and asked.

AND
... the main reason is so that you can inform them to when you make changes to the site.
I have morrors out there of pages that are just so old they are next to useless.

A mirror site should say that it is a mirror AND have a link to the original.

Thanks group,

An in-depth search shows that they are a bunch of Linux/GNU nerds - so I think I'll just feel flatter'd for now..

Jakob,

man..you should in my book not be worried..it follows your own rules.. You have put some work in a website..now somebody..like that somehow..!!! puts a "copy" of it on the net..just like a schematic of somebody elses work..no big difference... Be happy..you have just been "reverse engineered".. :D

Kind regards
