I created this forum in hope that we would get a paticular person to moderate it; they were unfortuneatley out of our range for now, so maybe we should merge this forum and turn this one into a tech world forum! It would be cool to get folks here that are into all sorts of cool things. I love hearing about new designs, software, toys etc. I'm sure there are a ton of forums/sites out there but I would like to see what we can come up with. Any ideas or mods out there?

    Don't give up yet!!

I did send an email to one of the other moderaters and asked about it.

What qualifications etc. I'm on slooow net but willing to co-moderate something here or somewhere else on the tech side for home-recording and musicians etc.

Taking on a tech question on the latest SSL etc, could be difficult as I don't access to an SSL, if you get my drift.

As I said there must be some interest out there and I live in hope that the DIY can get better organised. DIY for the Home or Pro-studio is worth the effort.

I wish there was more stuff going on in this forum. I'd love to pickup anything possible on electronics (theory, design, mods, troubleshooting), acoustics and room treatment, maintenance, hell, just about anything.

Maybe a shared project would get some activity going here. I'm thinking about building the Jensen cascode tube preamp outlined in their schematics, but I think the project might get some reworking. (I'll get into specifics if anyone's interested.) Anyone else into researching and planning a project cooperatively like that? Heck, we could even start basic, like doing a layout and step by step instructions to the deluxe direct box from the same set of links.

You figure if we do enough of this sort of thing with various aspects of the studio (including not just electronics, but even acoustics helpers like bass traps and diffusors), you'd have a resource for DIY'ers and a community already in the mindset to tackle new goals, and quite a bit more active than the current state, where we're just responsive to the odd question.

    Whaddya think?

Bear I'm right with you ...

I haven't mastered the Jensen pre yet but have been working on it for some time.

I know you all what Tube things but even though it is easy on paper there are a number of things that can upset the project.

I think there are some better first projects to get the confidence going and then do a Tube project. I think an LA2A is a better start than a Mic pre as the expectations for a Mic pre can be too high unless you go for an excellent design and excellent components.

I have many links to all sorts of projects both electronic and Acoustic. Where do you want to start?

If you can purchase an SSM2017 , SSM 2142 and a n LM833 I have a great simple Mic pre that is very neutral but is still my frontline Mic pre even against a Joemeek VC1Qcs ....

I have a simplified LA4 again you will need some SSM chips ... 2142 and 2143...

I am working on an 1176 but I'm not happy with the PCB layout.

As for the LA2a Tube project goes, check out:

This is a very good book and explains everything

Cool you guys, I'm impressed and quite supprised to see interest so quickly. Why don't you both moderate this puppy. We have room for two more if you both go for it. Maybe a few more will come forward and this forum will really be inovative.

    hey guys,

i'd be interested in working on a simple project. i don't have any experience in building gear (aside from an occasional mic/instrument cable). is there a project that's suitable for a beginner or would most things be too involved at this point? (i'm a computer guy not an electrical engineer).

Glad you're game, Neil. I'm actually thinking we should start basic and simple, building useful stuff we need. The other tricky element is picking stuff that we aren't better off just buying comercial gear which would cost the same as the parts.

So I'm assuming what we're into is somewhere in basic electronics, and not carpentry (at least I don't have the tools for carpentry, but I can borrow some if that's where we're going). What pieces do we need? What could we use another of? I think we can leave guitar amps to these guys for cooperative projects and general discussion. I would think we can hold off on mic preamps and compressors as the investment in parts and the level of knowledge might be a little higher than some interested DIY'ers. I just have a notion we need a soldering project before we get involved in active electronics, so I'd again suggest a good passive direct box. Or are we ready to jump into Kev's preamp, which sounds like a winner? Let's hear it, folks.

I have many passive DI and Interconnect boxes. I don't know where to start. Jensen TX's have many schematics on there site and anyone of these is cool and you don't have to use a Jensen as the basic ideas are there and will work with many TX's.

How about a simple TX DI box with earth lift and a low pass passive filter..... Bass guitar.

If you want to jump to a Mic-pre or a Comp have a look at,

    http://www.celestial.com.au/~rosswoo...dualmicpre.htm

Don't be too critical of the site as few knew about it ..... until now. Let me know if you have any problems or suggestions. There are some things nearly ready but you can't see them yet. DualOptoComp, 1176 and Jensen Mic-pre that I'm still not happy with yet.

    The site is slow ...
sorry I'm not made of money :(

    Kev,
very cool links. I'm actually starting some projects soon. Very basic stuff...i'm looking into PAIA Tubehead to start.
I like tubes and since i do live sound too i'm looking for something that can work on vocals and that i can carry around without worries. This unit is very versatile and works as preamp and can do as effect/processor as well.
I like also the small spring reverb ( Graig Anderton )...
On another note...very often you see these preamps/eq( Calrec/Audix/ Cadac ) and similar that are sold raw. You need to rack them and the appropriate PS. I know voltages for PS probably are different for each unit... i'm just curious if there is any source for this.
    Jo.
