2 ea. 11 pin males with the can if they have it>
Thanks! Oh, and a couple of female 11 pin sockets if they have them.
    And thanks Mark also.

Going to order 10 ea. EL Panels from LSI tomorrow.

If you want to have some fun, pull the cover off your T4 module, plug in a CD, and turn off all the lights so you can see that thing work!

I see from the older schematic that the T4a used 2 cells for gain and 1 for the meter, along with the R8 resistor. The T4b has 1 cell for each, along with the series cap and no resistor.

Going to ask Oliver at Tab/Funkenwerk if he will make me a T4 mu metal housing. A lid, a base and a three bend tube. Solder the lid on, tap out the base for some sheet metal screws. I can see if the housing makes any difference.

Kev -I got your male 8-pins.
Jenrick -I got your male & female 11-pins (no cans, but there you go!) -will return for the 8-pins... they have round base 8-pin males only BTW... Jenrick, will that work for you, or would you rather I got some 8-pin relays, since they have square bases, and might be better suited to T4b simulation...

Oh yeah... squirt me your snail-mail addresses and I'l start packing things up to ship!

SSL, Thanks for all the help! Go for the round octal plugs, 10 ea. I can get relay bases and stuff fairly easy at the surplus store down here.

Speaking of surplus stores LORD HAVE MERCY! This morning I went to get some big cable lugs for a 400 amp DC bench were building to test a Hall effect sensor. Anyway, what do I see out on the bargain basement parking lot racks? Heavy duty part organizer boxes, you know, the ones with all the plastic trays, only these were old school, welded, tough as nails, heavy gauge, no BS, boxes. 10 bucks a piece. Well, I could always use another organizer box, plus , these look pretty tough. Hmmm, are these trays full? THEY SURE ARE!!!!
I wonder whats inside? The trays, all 36 of them, were so jam packed that I could hardly get them open. Inside were ERO, AL- Elko, MKT, Siemens, Wima, Euroid, Eromet, all high quality, NOS, HIGH VOLTAGE, W. German made capacitors , NOS for TELEFUNKEN, in mint condition! 4.7uf, 6.8uf,10uf at 250V NON-ELECTROLYTIC! High end shunt feed output caps by the dozens! I didn't even go inside to pay for them. I just started loading the car up as fast as I could. I had to repark because the boxes were so heavy with parts that I couldn't carry them to the car fast enough. I loaded up 4 of the boxes. Two had capacitors, and two were packed with carbon comp resistors. One of the boxes had all carbon comp powere resistors, 2 watts and up. Way cool. Try getting those nowdays. Perfect for heavy duty plate resistors. I went inside to pay the 40 bucks I owed the guy. There's about 40 caps in each tray, times 36 is about 1500 capacitors per box. I figure at least 2 bucks a piece for those gems. So, two boxes, $3000 each box, thats $6,000 worth of capacitors for twenty bucks! From .027 at 600, or 1000 volts, on up into the high voltage lytics, which still test good. Somebody had these in their basement for years, as everything is tube related. Some poor soul must have passed. Everything was German. No tants to be found. Beautiful workmanship and colors. So I guess I'm set for life for most of my capacitors and resistors. I'm going back tomorrow for more, hopefully the box with the .027 and under caps is still there. Some times you just luck out. I don't know what the store owner was thinking. I would have gladly payed a buck a piece for those foil caps. Anyway, I'm jazzed. No more waiting to get ripped off by the mail order houses. No more fighting traffic to find that they don't have a .047 at 600 at the surplus house. I am in heaven!

Back to the T4 , the 10 EL panels should ship in 3 to 5 days from LSI. That's kind of a wait, so I ordered them UPS Orange (3 day).

I recieved 10 Clairex cells today and am currently preparing a test fixture. I am going to order more cells from Silonex tomorrow. I just wanted some old school parts from Clairex for comparrison, and also since their getting out of the LDR biz. It looks like Silonex is the vendor of choice from here on out for the LDR's.

    Testing:

I am going to experiment with various methods in order to screen and match cells, Using my UA T4 as a standard.

Resistance at various light levels: I have to build a box that can be adjusted for various light levels. The cells are very sensitive , so this might not be easy.

Attact time test: Using a LED and a storage scope, I am going to trigger the LED with DC and measure response time of the cell.

Release time: Turn the LED off and measure the time it takes for 50% reduction, using the scope to trigger on the falling DC.

Dynamic test: Using the signal generator to drive the LED directly with various frequencies of square Waves. I will feed a small voltage into the cell and measure the voltgage across a series resistor.
With one channel of the scope watching the signal generator and the other across the cell, I can see how the original cells track the square wave, and compare them with Clairex and Silonex.

A lot of fun work, so I better get on it!

    See ya,

PS: I have everybody who wants an EL panel on the list.

I placed an order for 25 NSL-5910's from Allied today. They are only $2.35 each as opposed to $7.54 for the Clairex units, quite a price difference. I should have them by Monday.

LSI is kinda slow, the EL panels won't ship until April 28th. Jeez! Do they have to mine the phosphor to make the powder or something? And I told them UPS 3 day and she sent them surface instead! So it will be 7 days from the 28th. Oh well. It will give me time to screen cells. Hang in there.

I was agonizing over not grabbing the other organizer box of capacitors at the surplus store last night, as they had all the values from .022 on down. Quite a lot of useful values. So I go back this morning, knowing that any fool who knows anything has already snagged it. It was still there!!! 10 bucks! Fully loaded! Most values rated at 1000 volts! Man I'm getin spoiled. Pultec city with this batch!

    See ya ...

Keith, The bakelite knobs have brass bushings and look like the ones on this MEQ. Let me know if thats what you want.

    Jenrick,

    Boy... -you've been industrious!!!

I took a photo of an 11-pin socket and plug if you want me to email it to you. (can't find an email address for you anywhere...) -I'll go back for the 8-pin stuff.

Man... If I'd have only been there...! -I think we should spend a day in each other's local suply places...! (actually that might be wierd... kinda like wife-swapping... on second thoughts better not!)

I built a couple of passive Tube-Tech front ends a year or two ago. -did it for a giggle and to help educate a local recording/mixing engineer, who works with a number of zillion-selling teen acts... Anyhow, with all of this DIY frenzy that I seem to have discovered when I stumbled across this board, I'm thinking of building a tube back end for them, and going all the way! ..Mind you, I might have to prise the passive EQ from the clammy fingers of the aforementioned engineer... I lent it to him and haven't had it back since! (he's been using Neve pres as make-up amps)

-Yes the knobs are exactly what I've been looking for!!! -Perfect!

I'll get the plugs right away!

not quite how I remember it.
I think a few of us had been dropping hints over at John K's forum for months before we finally managed to get you over here for a visit.

I am machining a block of Aluminum on the mill for stereo light tunnels for testing LDR's. Green HP HLMP 4700 LED's will be used , as they most approximate the aviation green of the EL panel. One LED will be located outside the fixture so I can see how much light I am testing with. LED's on one side, light cells on the other. Interior sprayed flat black.

EL panels and cells have been ordered.

Silonex says they will give me information on the UA light cells if I get UA to fax or email them written permission. Any ideas on how I can convince UA to do this without getting my arms broken!

Keith, I dropped you an email.
    (not a PM)

I am done with the LED jig. Am wiring it right now. I machined 4 light tunnels instead of 2 for mas production! Each LED has it's own trim pot for exact calibration from tunnel to tunnel. Almost ready to run tests!

The LDR jig is working very well! No need to test in the dark. Right now I am watching a Clairex cell tracking a square wave at 2 hz. Decay time looks like aboit 55 milliseconds at theis frequency. Very close to the 60 ms specified by Lawrence. Resistance and dynamic tests can be done on the jig without an external enclosure.

I'm burning out, and the liquor stores close in 45 min, so United Audio vs Clairex cells tracking side by side will have to wait til tomorrow.

Funny thing is, I registered ages ago on a prompt from Bill Roberts, over at audio-asylum... I looked around and must have missed this forum completely! -What I did se didn't really interest me, I think it was the mastering forum, and a couple of others like it...

So I for a long time completely ignored the "it's great over at R.O." posts... Well, that was my fault entirely!

By the way Kev, -are you familiar with Jimmy Barnes? -He's not very well known over here, -nor in England come to think of it- but I understand that he's well known over there...

Things were a little strange over here for a time. People like Jules and Brad started new things etc.

I think we have a very good balance now. Some might say that Tech Talk is all DIY we can talk about other things if you want.

    Jimmy,
yeah he is our working class hero.
I have never worked with him but did on occasion did see Cold Chisel.
At least I think I did.
    well,
friends tell me I did but I don't remember.
    I was much younger then.

Not so in to his modern stuff.
East and Circus Animals were pretty good albums.
