I really like using this on my voice. It seems to work fairly well.

I have heard that dynamic mics are affected much more strongly by preamps than condenser mics because the gain change required is so much greater.

This leads to two questions:

1) Will a better mic preamp fundamentally change the sound of a 57?

and

2) Which is the best pre to use with a 57? There must be some standard combinations for this mic. Can someone recommend a budget pre that would work in this capacity?

1) I believe so

2) Neve 1272. The budget pres I know of won't make it sound cool; they will just make it sound.

Edit: There is always the Brick, if that is in your budget...

The Neve 1272 (used) is about twice as much as I can spend. If the 57 sounds bad with cheap pres I think I'm going to go with a different mic. It just makes sense to use them since I already own a few.

The SM57, is a great mic - for what it is. That said, any ol', inexpensive, mixer preamp will get about as much out of it as it has in it. DON'T put alot of money into a pre for this mic. Of course a thousand dollar pre may make it sound "better", hard to say, but why would you want to?

And - any dynamic mic works just fine plugged into the "mic input" of any soundcard, no "fancy" pre needed to make it work - just "a pre"... Condensers often need 48v phantom power. Condensers and ribbons(Generally) need MORE gain, from the pre, than dynamics.

ANY preamp WILL change the sound of any mic. The best solid-state pre's change the sound least, the tube pre's(Generally), the most.

BTW: If you like the way an SM57 makes you sound, wait until you get ahold of a really great mic on a really great pre!
