hi,

i'm new here.

just bought an AKG 535EB small diaphram condenser and was wondering whether leaving it attached to a stand in my room would be ok - does it shorten it's lifespan in any way or will recording quality be affected by dust settling in? should i keep it in the box? will leaving the sponge/wind shield on have any negative effects?

as you can see i'm quite paranoid :D but i definitely need to keep my investments healthy.

I have had a C535eb for years and it was left out a lot, as my friend (who had the 'studio') at his house, couldn't be arsed to put it away! Anyway, it still sounds the same!

However, I tend to put all my mics away after use, but if I do leave one out for a few days, I put a sock over it! Simple and effective.

I picked up one of those plastic drawer things at Home Depot - you know, the kind of organizer thingy to keep stuff in.

This one has drawers that are about 3.5 inches wide X 3.5 inches high X 10 inches deep. I put the foam cutouts that the mics shipped in on the bottom of each drawer along with the little silica bags and VOILA! Instant mic organization.

just FYI there is SOME controversy about plastic bags especially in a humid environment.
unless you DO use silica gel or some other dehumidifier thingy, you are basically trapping moisture IN, in a baggy... probably worse for a mic than dust can ever be.

i would personally leave the mic out of a bag and leave the foam-y, nerfy, pop screen on it.
that keeps dust out without encouraging moisture in.
also works fine to leave then on ALL thee time, in my experience.

Those little bags of silica gel can't hold an infinite amount of water (about 10% of their dry weight) and so are pretty much useless unless you reactivate them (i.e. dry them in an oven at >100 deg C for 24 hours) pretty frequently. Probably best not to bother.

I think cover mics from dust but don't seal them up is the best approach. Unless you bring a cold mic into a warm environment condensation shouldn't normally be a problem.

Remind me to never come sing at your place....... :D

once again thanks guys but i think it's too humid around here for plastic bags - i'll just leave the sponge thing on the mic ...

Witt,

Good point. I have the plastic bags hanging over the mikes, leaving them fully open at the bottom. My goal is just to keep dust from collecting on the mike and getting through the grill onto the diaphragm. I have central air so humidity is not a problem.
