I'm about to record a soprano sax soloist in my living-room. The guy playing is a semi-pro and we have the following equipment:
Mics:
- AKG Solidtube
- RODE NT1000
- Matched pair of ADK Vienna Edition
- SM57
Pre:
- dbx 376 tube mic preamp
Interface
- Digidesign Digi002 Rack
We will use the dbx for the main mic and then via SPDI/F and also put up the Vienna for ambience/room and plug them into the 002.
I think we have decent equipment to get a good take. However I'm not so sure about what mics to choose and what mic placement to use for the soprano sax.
Should we go for the clean NT1000 or the more colorful Solidtube? Or perhaps the SM57?
Yes I know it depends. Yes I know that listening is most important, but it would be great to get a hint from you guys on how to start .

Anywhere EXCEPT at the end of the bell. Most of the sound does not come out there except when all the keys are down, and then it is very honky.
The simple (but not sarcastic) answer is wherever the sound is best. Too many variables to give a cookbook recipe. Let your ears be your guide.

First I hung blankets and cloth on the curtain hangers in the room in order to calm down the acoustics.
After experimenting a with the mic position we ended up with the Solidtube pretty close (2 ft) from the lower part of the body of the sax. We had to do it this close because too much of the room went into the recording otherwise.
The result sounds reasonably good in my ears!
We should have taken a picture... but I own no digital camera and my analog is out of film!
