just finished work on pro-tools . the masterlink has gone down for reasons unknown and is being repaired but a new project needs to be mixed down for mastering- what are the pros and cons on the equipment available to me
there is a fostex e-2 with 456 tape with only a dbx 224 for tape noise
also a pro Sony mini disk or a Sony rdr gx7 DVD recorder or the mac g-5 or even the possibility to burn every thing to a G hard drive ? i have a -b almost all these at one point but only for recording material
The mini-disk does sound acceptable but the compression thing is worrisome
The reel interests me but its been in the closet so long ill have to send it out to be set up it sounds good even with test tapes but who knows the idea of burning onto a DVD ? only audio is this a welcome idea? The artist still has not made up there mind on whos to master it so i realy cant call them.(ill search the forums more deeply if it has been discussed . this idea of burning music (recording onto ) a DVD i can burn a data DVD on the mac ? shall i give the artist a mix in all formats (no) I'm going out of the mac via Pro Tools so i can go digital on the md or DVD burner but will have to go out analog to the reel Please forward any links to this question from the past if you aware of any or advice is greatly appraised

Yes the Mini disk was only a consideration when i noticed some of the top mastering companies offering to do work on that format but really even the rack ears dont got me running to it ..it is in the studio as a back up only i use it always runnig .. just in case i lose that one file by gods own mischief or that wire that wasnt to be removed yet and twice in 6 years i have to say thank you it was there . Zilla program dependent meaning? you mean send the mix to a stereo track and burn this ? this may prove to be a good idea perhaps auditioning any plug in this way

You are already working with audio files within protools. I think you should just create a set of stereo audio files (WAVs, AIFF's) and burn that data onto a disc (CD-r or DVD-r). Any mastering engineer will be able to play those back. Depending on the facility, you could also send those files via the internet.

Since the fostex deck is in unknown condition, and you are obviously not totaly on-game with printing to tape, this is probably not a good option.
If you are in protools already, I would simply bounce-to-disc and deliver stereo audio files via a hd or data-disc. Alternately, you could record the stereo outs back into a new audio track in the same protools session. This sometimes results in a sonic variation that may be prefered to the bounce method. Results are somewhat program dependent.
