As far as I know there have been several changes to the 4050 throughout it's lifetime, but I don't think these have been reflected in its name.

As moonbaby points out there is a difference in the packaging. Any pictures of the 4050 CM/5 I've seen have had the old-style spider mount (8441 I think). The current mount is the 8449 type, which is the now familiar ring with the elastic bands supporting the mic holder.

According to some misinformed sources on the Internet, the CM5 is a version using a pre-polarised electret capsule. This is NOT true. The 4050 is externally polarised.

I finally found info on the AT4050/cm5 via (google search).
Apparantly......the 4050 is neck and neck with the Shure KSM44 as far as specs are concerned.
In the artical....the engineer tries out both ,4050/cm5,and the KSM44,with the same out come.
The reason i was asking what the diff,was----is due to the fact that, I found a AT405 in a pawn, for $225.00-----------
Im goona buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!

$225? Well in that case it's a no brainer -get there before someone else does!

The KSM44 is another great mic. Some say it's under-rated, but I think it is beginning to make its mark. It's difficult to find a bad review.

Enjoy your 4050!
