My band and I have been looking for a name for long but every cool thing we think of seems to belong to a band somewhere on earth.

Our original name "Divine" which I really want to keeps seems to be used by a couple of bands... but so does everything else we think of.

I've been putting of artwork, logo and website for long because of this.

Any pointers you guys could give me? ... should I simply ignore other bands?

Also, I like taking out a poetry book out of the library, and just peruse for cool random combos of words. Random wikipediaish works too. In theory, there should be some kind of back story, funny play on words, or relation to the sound, mission, or location of the band.

For instance, my current project is a ukulele driven reggae pop song cover band. We came up with River Vibrations. Vibrations is a trippy reggaeish kind of name, and we from a town called Toms River. Works for us!

It does matter if they are not famous. Non famous bands can sue you just like anyone else. A good example of this is the band Middian. A great down tempo metal band. They signed to Metal Blade and were then sued by a band who only played one show ever over the name. And lost. And lost alot of money fighting it in court. With the internet, it is easy to find out if a band name exists by googling it. Also easy to see if a band is using the name that you were using first. And also easy to find a lawyer who wants nothing more than to suck you dry
