How do I transfer audio from my Sony PCM-M1 to my Toshiba laptop? Do I need special software or hardware? Just connecting with 1/8 inchers isn't bringing up anything--I mean, I hear the audio, but nothing shows the capacity to record--I have Windows Media Player, Real Player, etc.

Any tips?

Thanks so much for your time.

You need 2 things - a 7pin to coax cable to get out of the M1 (you can get them from a number of places on the web - most inexpensively at Coresound http://www.core-sound.com), and a soundcard with digital in. Best inexpensive card out there right now in terms of price, features and ease of use is probably the Audiophile 2496 from M-Audio ($99 at Guitar Center and several other places).

So for about $150 or so you'd be sending a digital stream into your PC, which will be MUCH better than coming out analog from the 1/8 plug and doing the AD conversion in your laptop (probably through another 1/8 plug!)

You can record and track in CDWav (http://www.cdwave.com) which is free, but if you want to do any kind of editing in post you will need something like Soundforge. A lot of folks say Audacity is good, and I believe it's open source (i.e. - FREE).

Hope this helps.
