What plus-in(s) might have been used to distort the voice on this section?

I would do it with Fabfilter Saturn or make the saturation withing the gain staging of the preamp and then use any EQ to shape it afterward.

I watched a video about Fabfilter Saturn. That's gotta be the ticket! Thanks!

LPF (3kHz or so) -> distortion* -> BPF (300Hz to 3kHz or so) -> delay (500ms?, moderate feedback/repeat) -> reverb.

*Tube emulation would be good. A guitar amp simulator might get it done.

It might be preferable to put the delay/reverb on an effects send rather than directly on the channel. It sounds as if possibly only the delay has reverb. It's kind of hard to tell with that horrendous synth sound clawing at my ears.

By the way it's the section at the 4:37 mark that I was trying to replicate -- not the intro. I thought that the video link was going to start at 4:37 and this site is not letting me edit my first post.
The FabFilter Saturn has a couple of patches that seem to do what they did to the voice on this song.

Is FabFilter the only company with strange effects like this? Any other recommendations?

Izotope has "trash" a multiband distortion plug. Waves has "studio rack" which is free, and allows you to do parallel and multiband processing with your waves plugs, all in one screen.

Izotope had some interesting effects and it's about $50 cheaper. I still like the FabFilter Saturn best, at least for replicating something like what was done for this song.

Try Soundtoys 5, they have quite few "off the wall" fx, there is a rack included where you can place multiple vst's and get some really wierd fx, I use SoundToys very often and they are just pure class, and very effective in dialing in a unique flavour to a sound.
