All you have to do is record the 2 tracks into your computer, just the way they are. If you have your mono track and your side track already in your computer, you do not need to screw around with hardware phase reversers! You simply take your side channel and duplicate it. Then you invert the phase of the duplicate. Pan one side to the left, pan the other side to the right. Take your mono mid track and pan to center! Just make sure you are listening to the proper left right perspective and if it is backwards, reverse the side channels. To adjust the stereo width, just increase or decrease the Mono track. You now have a completely mono compatible when collapsed from stereo track.

Your software may even have presets for MS decoding already in the program! Most do.

Now if you want to accomplish this in a live setting?? You will need 2 devices. 1 is an XLR "Y" cord, 1 female to 2 males. Then you will need an XLR phase reverse in-line adapter. Plug your middle " mono" microphone into input 1. Then take your side microphone and plug it in two inputs 2 and 3. Take 2 and pan that left. Take 3 and pan that right. If the stereo image appears backwards reverse inputs 2 and 3. Stereo wideness can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing channel 1, you're mono source.

The purists will argue that by splitting a microphone into 2 inputs you will be loading down the microphones impedence. Boo hoo, regardless, it works great, sounds great, what you don't know won't hurt you.

If you don't like to do that, do it from the output from your inserts but then you'll need transformers for both in that becomes a real cluster *!:?>
