It very much depends on which models you are talking about. At this level it is no longer which is better, but which is best for you. I wouldn't say the Genelecs are in the colored catagory but others might agree. They both are different but the same just like in apples where you have both green and red to choose from.

I'm using the 1031a and its an ammmmmmmmmazing monitor.
I don't know about colored, i do not agree,
But i do agree it is much more forgiving speaker than most of the other monitors out there.

Like every other monitor system u have to learn the genelec , learn it in your space and give it the time it takes.
I'm using the genelec in my own studio and sometimes i'm going to mix or record in other places without my genelecs and everything else just sounds like a cheap substitude to the real thing, you can hear every noise / breath /guitar screch (you will even hear a buterfly 3 meters from the mic) throughout the haviest mix you will work on, the genelecs have unlimited headroom and there is no "speaker compression" involved at all, once you will learn this speaker you'll never want to change them with anything else ! :tu:

I can tell you this... if you step up a bit, you will get used to better sound, and you will find Genelecs et al disturbing. (Not a knock at Genelec particularly... most anything in a similar style...) I bought Dunlavys and now when I walk into a room with Gennies I can hear the components.

I don't know what the difference is, maybe Bob Katz can explain it. He uses Ref 3As out of a small company in Canada.

My previous espereiences with monitors was in Tanoy, Mackie, JBL, Gennie, etc. so that was my reference.

But it is a significant financial difference, and a higher quality amp is a part of the equation.

Frank Wells and Glenn Meadows had been promoting the Cello as a great amp, and I was fortunate to find a Cello Duet 350 used.

Had I not been so lucky, I was looking at a pair of Aragon Paladiums.

I've got Genelec 1031s and a 1092 sub and I've also got a set of Quested 2205s and a VS112 sub. Without a doubt the Questeds work better for me. They're easier to listen to for extended periods of time and my mixes translate better as compared to the Genelecs. I can't comment on the Quested model that you're considering since I have no experience with them. My suggestion would be to get a set of both monitors and work with them for a while. The guys at Quested are very helpful and will probably make an arrangement for you to demo a pair. As for Genelec you'll probably need to check out a local dealer.

thanks for your input!

-i am about to purchase a 2nd-hand Q108.
-i can't take them out of the controlled environment, which they are stored in, to test them
-Q108s are no longer in production hence can't arrange for a demo from the guys at Quested (a demo of it's successor the VS2108 would not be fair)

but thanks for mentioning Questeds work better for you - i basically need some assurance that i'm not about to blow my money on sh*t :D

Well, there is no doubt that the Questeds aren't shit. Neither are the Gennies. I've only heard Questeds once, but they stuck in my mind at the time as sounding particularly good given the situation. It was in Davit Hewitt's remote truck on a Van Halen date, and these were shipped in the day before the gig during band rehersal and thunked down on the meter bridge (with some wooden supports and fancy spikes), fired up and put to work. A truck is not the best place to judge, but I kept Questeds on my list.

As I said though, Gennies aren't bad, either.

And don't forget that your amp is going to play a big part on the quality of sound.

If you take a look at this replacement part supplier, you'll see the drivers for the Q108 and the VS2108 are interchangeable:

http://www.trian.peachhost.com/ct_PR15155053.htm
http://www.trian.peachhost.com/ct_PR15158600.htm

So, it's highly likely they're going to have very similar sonic properties.

Also, the Morel tweeter and Volt midbass used in the Questeds are a few steps above the drivers used in the Genelecs. You know the old saying goes something like "the dish is only as good as the ingredients you put into it".

wow there's humor in Germany :D  you just have to dig deep!

How's the Questeds?
I bought a pair of H208 and never looked back to the Gennies. The Questeds midrange is so clear and analytic - mud turned into music;-)
