I’ve been a lurker of this forum for some time (only recently creating a user account). Based on your input, I’ve bought an RME Fireface 800, a pair of BM5A’S, an SM7B, RODE NT2A, and ART MPA Gold, ART VLA compressor, among a few other things.

Thanks much. Thus far, I’ve been very happy with all my purchases. Despite some of the negative things I’ve read about the ART stuff, they’ve even done ok.

I’d like to have a ribbon mic, and have pretty much decided on the AEA R-84. From what I’ve gathered here, I need a really “quiet” pre, with lots of gain. I don’t think the ART MPA fits that bill. They barely cut it on the SM7. I love the pre’s in my RME, but I’m not sure if they’ll be enough for a ribbon. Is it absolutely necessary that I get another pre before buying this ribbon?

Little help please…….

I just used a Royer SF12 through channels 9&10 of my RME on a VERY high profile project (VERY, VERY high profile...). I have no complaints!

Depending upon your sound source, I think this would work just fine. In fact, my sound source was a chorus on the other end of a cathedral with a 6.5 second RT60. I had the gain cranked to the max and was using them for surrounds over 75 feet away from the ensemble itself. No problems there.

If it's for more direct vox, guitar, drums, then CERTAINLY you won't have a problem.

Cheers and best of luck!
Jeremy
