Care to expand on the concept of a volume envelope?
My guess is that he means that riding your faders correctly can often be used instead of compression - or maybe that people sometime use compressio ... |

| If you want to play to a drum machine, fire your drummer. I can't imagine putting up with a drummer (or any musician) and then quantizing their music. Playing drums exactly at the same millisecond ... |

Does the direct box have a ground lift switch? Have you tried that? I'm really groping at straws here. Your description sounds like a gain structure problem, not a ground problem.

| Another vote for monitors over mics. The 57s and 58s are good mics. The only thing I'd use budget condensers for in place of them would be drum overheads and acoustic guitar. I think a 58 is better ... |
