Does the direct box have a ground lift switch? Have you tried that? I'm really groping at straws here. Your description sounds like a gain structure problem, not a ground problem.

Another vote for monitors over mics. The 57s and 58s are good mics. The only thing I'd use budget condensers for in place of them would be drum overheads and acoustic guitar. I think a 58 is better ...
