The RME is a good choice.
If you want a passive balanced volume control for your monitors, I found the M-Patch 2 from SM Pro Audio to be adequate and good value. |

My guess is that when you think you are listening to just tracks 15 and 16 you actually have other tracks in there as well, or you are not listening to 15/16.
