Everybody should have sm57 and/or 58. The Beta's aren't worth the extra expense.
Don't go cheap on the condenser mic. The cheap ones tend to be harsh in the mids and high frequency range for vocal ... |

Believe or not it could be just a matter of more pick attack to increase the urgency in the emotional state. as for the bright attack, it could be placement, mic type or room acoustics.
