Ive heard that tube mic in tube pre isn't a good mix though.
If that were true, records from Sinatra to Beatles and beyond would sound like crap...
And I'm certain they got plenty of sex! ... |

How about adding a mic pre with toobs? Better yet, a pre with big transformers! They would make every mic in your collection sound that much better!!  |

Best mic that will also be best or near best at MANY other applications is the Shure KSM44. You'd have to spend HUGE money to beat this mic!
For less money, the EV RE27 and RE20 are great for bass ... |

Just my opinion, be it ever so humble ... reduce the reverb, swap channels so the bass is on the left (as it would be if you were sitting at the piano - only pianists would get that however).

| As a rogue suggestion, try EV RE200s or Crown CM700s. Both excellent choices for your purposes, and fairly inexpensive - especially on fleabay. I like 'em both, but only have the EVs now... |

| BTW, I liked my 2 Firepods... sold 'em to move up to the Firestudio (needed the digital I/O) so I could also use a Focusrite 428 and Ampex 354 for different flavors. |

What are the advantages of using a seperate mic-pre over a built-in one?
Depends upon your intentions and how much you spend... The separate pres are "USUALLY," but not always, better quality than ... |

Is it just me (with headphones) or do all but the EV sound a bit "muddy?"
I thought the e604 was 2nd clearest (after the EV).
Not sure "clear" is the right descriptor... maybe "brighter" in the ... |
