First off, thanks for coming to check out the post. These forums have really guided me through my mixing journey. I have only been at it for about a year or so and really haven't scratched the surface yet. This song is a Hip Hop song with a war like theme. I have a bunch of nice gun and bomb and battlefield type sound effects and I would like to mix them in throughout the song. The problem is every time I try to mix a sound in, it sticks out like a soar thumb. I've tried turning it way down and panning and eqing, but still can't get that natural sound like it belongs there. Maybe you can share a few tips if you have worked with SFX in music.
Aside from that problem, I would like any feedback on the mix itself. Theres nothin like a fresh set of ears to give me a different perspective.
You can find the song at:
http://briefcase.yahoo.com/kirchhogfarm@sbcglobal.net
It is in the "SDP Mix Sample" folder and the song is called "Fall In."
Beware there is some foul language on this track. Also, the only SFX I got on there now is during the intro but I am trying to get a few during the verses, let me know what you think.
I appreciate your time,
-C |

The song "fall in" does not exist in any of those folders. |

I love the hook in the chorus then to the sound of the megaphone. I hear rifle related sounds (no firing) during group drill practice in the chorus. I think thats what I want to hear thats not there. I'm not too fussed about the melody, sounds like an accordian, louisiana style! I also did not detect much in the low bass region.Though some might disagree, I think a thicker bass line might absorb or mask some of the lower frequncies in the sound effects. |

Halifax, thanks for the tips, I feel you on rifle sounds during the chorus, I will have to play around with that. The melody is trumpets and violins, it does sound like an accordian now that you mention it, haha. I might have to change the sample, any suggestions? |

if you using reason 3.0. I just A B'ed some subractor sounds to ut usin the same melody. if you used add a new patch using the trumpet melody I think It thickens it up. The subtractor patches I used were from the factory sound bank one was: Searchbass and the other was bassy bass. Those were the only 2 I thought were appropriate. |

Sounds really good now, sounds bigger than the last one. I wonder if the volume of the trumpet on the chorus is like 1-3mm to high on the fader. Thats the only thing I hear. I don't work with rap or hip-hop at all, but part of me wants to feel mind shattering bass but I don't know if thats best for the song. Maybe its cliche, I dunno. Good luck on the mix.
Who are these guy and where are they from? |

Halifax, I appreciate the feedback. The trumpet on the chorus could be turned down a little. We are from Northern California, a couple hours north of Sacramento. I am the guy on the first verse and the big parts on the chorus.
thanks again,
