An absorption cloud design

I still think it looks a cool as it did the first time Smile

I was just thinking......

If it was extend across the WHOLE CEILING Width ( or even whole ceiling ), you'd get the added benefit of extra standing wave absorption too, as the corners would be covered. Smile

I'm always suggesting people utilise the ceiling for lots of absorption. If you got the celing height it's a good use of dead space.

Hey, just finding this post. I think your design would be perfect in the loft ceiling of the room I record drums in. I'm not sure about a lot of things (how cumbersome 703 is to wrap, what to wrap it with, where to get the material, etc Laughing

), but I think I might have to just dive in and see what happens. Kinda like my recent delve into preamp/compressor DIY.
I had an idea on a variation to this idea, do you guys think it would be cool to do 2 or 3 of these type things across the V in the ceiling and stagger them in height? I was thinking it might be extra effective where they would overlap. And maybe be neat design-wise. Kinda like this:

Or would that be worthless?
Sounds fun if I have the time to do it. (?)

703 is easy to wrap. I used musilin fabric; others have used burlap and more expensive flame retardant fabrics from Guilford of Maine.

Your staggering idea might look cool, but these things are most effective when they have a nice ammount of space behind them.

Right, I wanna hang them down about a foot or two off the wood beam that runs down the middle of the 12ft ceiling by wire, or maybe heavy fishing line would be cool. Might make them look like they are floating at first glance. If it is dimly lit. And they could sway gently in the breeze of drumsticks.

I'm about to attempt something similar in the next few days . I'll have to see what's available from my hardware store . i doubt it will look so schnazzy ..

I was wondering a few things :

Is there an optimum distance from ceiling that the cloud shoud be hung ?

where in relation to your set up is the cloud located ? more above your listending area or more above your speakers ?

finally , my ceiling is slanted , should i look at hanging the cloud level or in relation to my ceiling

The more distance, the better.

It is halfway between the two.

Probably level. You don't want the angle of incidence to be overly steep.

i'm also curious as to the best way to attach the fabric to the 703 panels.

also, with the 703 - is one side more absorbent than the other?

I've used a similar design in my home control room.
I found these 701 1" panels that were 4'x5'.
I put them over the console and mix position but I splayed them on a 4/12 pitch with the wide end suspended at the front wall and also in a 4/12 "V" shaped pitch toward the early reflection panels on each side of the mix position. It seemed to help greatly with reflections and also bass absorption in the room. The frames were aluminum with spline grooves so I rolled muslin as a cover in the spline grooves. I'll post a picture.

What do you guys think about splaying them front to back and side to side. could this be useful or are they more efficient hanging level?

You managed to come up with something that is not only lightweight but looks very clean and professional.

Nice work.

I was planning on using 1x4 pine but if I can find something similar to your aluminum I'm definitely going to follow suit.

Just a random thought. I'm trying to decide how to hang my cloud and you got me thinking. You could use picture frames. It wouldn't be cheap, but it would look nice.
