Default Microphone & Pre Amp Recommendations?

Does anyone have any microphone/Pre-amps they would recommend?

Has anyone tried the M-Audio Luna - mic? Any comments??

Product availability in Canada is also a must! (I'm sure all major brands are available here...but I'm not really sure).

    Any help is appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Chris

Any specific price range or other requirements? 2-channel pre? 8-channel? Single? Is this a general purpose mic/pre (vocals, instruments, etc), or specialty?

I'd like to keep the cost of the mic and preamp below $500 Cdn.

General purpose for recording male vocals.

I've already got a midi sound card that has the capability of having a preamp hooked up to it. (The card I have is M-Audio's Audiophile).

2 channel would likely be sufficient.

    Thanks for your response.

I would take a look at this for an inexpensive mic pre: http://www.fmraudio.com/RNP8380.htm (they so have Canadian distributors).

I can't vouch for the quality personally, but FMR has a good reputation for quality inexpensive gear. Street price might be in your price range, with a mic, but it is close. For mics, I have heard the Luna is very good for the price.

Another is the Studio Projects VTB-1. Again, haven't used it, but it's inexpensive and more likely to be decent than some others.

If you are looking for something in that price range, I might suggest a pair of those ART $60 US each tube microphone preamplifiers and a nice Shure Beta 58. A very nice general-purpose microphone with a little extra high frequency response over the venerable SM 58 and tough enough to hammer nails with! Very manly! I think you might also find that the Beta 58 sounds more like a Neumann U87 than any other cheap condenser microphone? Very nice for male vocals, sung or spoken.

Please don't beat me with that microphone.

Beta58 sounds closer to an U87 than any other condenser?.....

One combination I would highly recommend you is: aSebatron VMP2000VU with a TLM 193.

    Alecio!?

The poster's asking for a mic/pre combo for 500(Canadian) or less!

The TLM 193 is, what, 1400 smackers(US)! ALL BY ITSELF!

What the Sebatron costs I don't know, as a Google search came up with nothing, not even a factory link(Other than posts on this forum)? I must have spelled it wrong..?

Let's let the person "work up", ey..?

I guess we all knew U87's never were that great as mics, and not very good carpentry tools...... Come to think of it, I didn't like that Newman guy on Seinfeld, either. He should stay home and try to design better mics, with better studio construction abilities.
