Does anybody know anything about wood slat diffusors? Supposedly these are very good diffusors, but seem to be amenable to DIY. They consist of a stack of boards with every other one removed. |

Call me thick headed, but I'm kinda' corn-fused here...
It almost sounds like you're describing a slot resonator as opposed to a diffusor.
Slot resonators are typically angled across a corner. They are a narrow band absorber, in that they are "tuned" to absorb a narrow band of "low" frequencies.
There are a few of those calculators in the files I'm looking for in answer to your other post. (Which I'll try to snag here in a few.)
The way that they are tuned is with the construction. The factors that are in play are the depth behind the slats, the thickness of the slats, the width of the slats and the gap between the slats.
Since the slats are wooden boards, (hard surface) I guess you "could" call them a diffusor, but the boards really only reflect frequencies that can't "fit" in the slots. They don't actually diffuse the sound energy.
I honestly don't know if there's a diffusor that's built this way... but I have PLENTY of this stuff to still learn.

Wave
The diffusors you are asking about are Schroeder diffusors; there is a section in Everest's "Master Handbook of Acoustics" that has the necessary math and patterning for building them.

That link does not lead to a slat resonator. That is a difussor. It does no absorption. |

Sheet,
Respectfully, Wave was inquiring about "slat" difussers and I got side-tracked into only thinking about a slot resonator from his description... e.g. the reference to the "stack of boards with every other one removed."
Wave,
If you follow the RPG link in my last post, is this the "type" of diffuser you are talking about?
OR
Are you talking about a slot resonator/low frequency absorber?
Since they are competely different, I think we need clarification.
Still corn-fused,

Max, what "RPG link"?
Sheet, no not a corner base trap. The "stack of boards" is not edge-to-edge but face-to-face. Mounts on the wall.
Goldstar, a Schroeder diffusor appears to be much more sophisticated by comparison. Is a Schroeder amenable to DIY?
This thing is really simple, but I've been unable to find any technical info about it, like lab tests. I did find one at
http://www.soundcontrolroom.com/products/diffusion/woodSlat.htm
but no test data, no theory, nothing. I also heard these were in the Massenberg studios, but no verification.

Click on the word "these" in the sentence that reads; "Oh yeah... you mean like these from RPG?"
(You can imbed html into your messages... it takes the form of [ url=http://xxxxx.whatver ] text [ /url ]. You just remove the spaces between the [ and ] brackets and php will interpret it as a link. Make sense?) You can find out more about it when you post to a thread... it's the last button that labeled "URL".
