I am in the process of balancing the acoustics in my control room. My main plan of attack for the bass frequency attenuation is to attempt building some bass traps in the manner that has been discussed in multiple threads on this forum. My question is this: I bought a batch of sound board (fiber board) for a ridiculously low price. I'm having trouble locating mineral wool (Rockwool), so I would like to try using the sound board as an alternative. I have enough board to make 6 four and a half inch thick bass traps in frames 2' x 4'. Do any of the forum members have any experience trying to use this material in this fashion? I know that the sound board is good for cutting high frequencies in single layers, but does it have enough mass/absortion to cut out lower frequencies if used in multiple layers?
Thanks for any thoughts on this matter! |

This isn't going to work - not even for mid and high frequencies -
You have to be able to breathe through the product - you can do this with rockwool - you can do this with fiberglass - you can do this with cotton - you can't do this with soundboard.

Thanks for the reply Rod. I guess I'm back to my search for Rockwool....
I'm sure I'll find other more effective uses for the soundboard. |

If you filled int he location field on your profile, we could help you locate rockwool, or its equivalent.

Thanks for the suggestion. I took your advice and completed my info. i'm a bit out of the way here in Montana, so I certainly would appreciate any information on finding appropriate acoustic materials! |

Looks like Denver, Boise or SLC are your closest SPI reps depending on which part of Montana you're in; if you use them, don't drive there til you call; different branches carry different stuff. I'd call and get a list of what types of "wool" they carry that are 2.5 to maybe 4 PCF density, and go from there... steve |

Thanks for the links and suggestions. I was able to find a local small insulation company that has have some leftover Rockwool from a specialty job that they did. It sounds like they have enough to suit my purposes, and I won't have to have it shipped! |
