I have been hearing a lot of positive things about the Heil microphones. Any opinions on them. (PR20, PR30, PR40). I have never used them so my opinion is neutral but people are comparing them to Neumann Microphones which I find hard to believe for the price but I'm curious of there sonic value.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving you post!

First...I dont know how you can compare dynamic mics (The Heils) with Neumanns (condensers). These are two different animals entirely. Although, theres a Neumann that is a broadcast mic and it may be a dynamic also...?? Perhaps this is where the comparisons are coming from.

Anyway, the Heil mics are ALL that they are touted to be. I put them in the same sonic catagory as SM7 Shure, EV RE20, and even Sennheiser MD421.

Maybe the comparison to the Neumann models came up because in the original ads on the Heil website, there were quotes doing just that. These statements, along with the Ty Ford article reviewing the PR40, have been removed from their current site. I bought a PR-40 last year and it was everything that Mr. Ford said it was.

Davedog, which Heil model would you say relates to the SM7, RE20, and MD421? I am in the market for a good voice-over mic, which might also see some duty as a kick drum mic, and maybe a guitar cab once in a while. I was pretty much sold on the MD421 for its versatility, but if I can get something very much in the same ballpark for less cash, this would be a good thing! ANDY

I would have to say that both the PR30 and the PR40 run in this class of mics. A bit more detail than any of the well-knowns mentioned. Though I'm not a broadcaster or a podcaster, the hype this last year from this segment has been all about these mics. I have heard all the models and am impressed by them all. The next "The Spitboys" record will have some of these mics on it. Vocals and I'm sure percussion and I'm going to use the 30 on the Banjo just to see whats what there. Stay tuned. (LOL....getting a "The Spitboys" record done is a long drawnout process...usually takes a couple of years even though theres material for a couple more records already to go!!!!)

The guy I'm recording VO for has a pretty bassy/resonant voice...really so, actually. So I'm thinking the PR40 might be good in this case. Want to highlight what he's got, and not put any unneccesary "shine" on a great big voice. As a side benefit, I'm thinking the PR40 for kick, and maybe on a guitar cab as well. The guitar player I work with uses a Mesa Boogie amp...some massive 55 watt thing. I told him its overkill, and he should spend some scratch on a 15 watt little guy to record with. This would make my life easier! ANDY
