Boombox's are for breakdancing, not mixing.

I check all my final mixes on an old beat up boom box. Mine is an old 15+ year old GE unit. Find one that is very popular among most people. For those times when I am really concerned about how my mix will sound on small speakers, I will also use my TV speakers or a small clock radio.

I take my rough mixes to Best Buy and place like that and try to listen to it in anything that will play a CD. I'll balance it between quite and noisy listening areas to determine if the parts I wan to show through really do. I'll test drive cars as well, double bonus there Wink

Any one setup won't help you. You need to average it.

Consider the Avantones.

Personally, if I feel the need to check a mix, I burn out a copy and take it in the truck with me.

Terrapin, we all listen to our mixes on as many systems as we can. We want to know how our product transfers and relates on as many systems as possible. Everybody has a ghetto blaster and so we typically will also listen to our product on one of those, provided it is a common smaller popular size and not one of those incredible behemoths that you see parodied in stupid movies.

My new reference standard is the 1/2" "Altec/Lansing" speakers in my Hewlett-Packard laptop. If I can hear the bass on those, I know I'm good. 1/2" Altec/Lansing speakers. LOL! Right! My other friends Hewlett Packard laptop has "Harman/Kardon" speakers! I want one with "JBL's"! Hey! Aren't those all the same company?? And do you really think those are the speakers made by those companies? I think not! I believe it might be made by their Chinese slave children division??

Children make miniature speakers. Right?

Life changed for the better once I started monitoring on multiple systems.

I use a Panasonic boom box that I found in the late 90s which had (GASP!) an aux input. At the time, these were nearly imposs to find.

Real work is through Audix 1As, but then I reference through the Panasonic and check bass levels using Yorkville NX550s.

I like to record a lot of rock and metal and other types of music including techno and what not....

I have M-Audio monitors, but I split the AUX to my JVC MXGT80. You know, one of those cute little stereo systems with the subs and giga tubes, totally about 350W power...

They're actually pretty bassy but not loud, the speakers are really small. Anywho, I usually use that to see just HOW bassy my mix is. If it's muddy on those speakers then I know I effed up. It should be smooth bass and kick drum.

I take it to my Scion xB too which has a kick ass stock stereo system with nice mid drivers... It's actually really punchy in there, so it's nice to to listen to my stuff there...

But yes, I mix and record with my monitors and check for things on my JVC and in my car...
