The gap is in the magnetic core, "de-shorting" the magnetic circuit.
You can't gap an ungapped transformer - unless you put in a new core.

I know that transfomers are gapped to avoid DC saturation. Where is the gap placed and can you gap a non gapped transformer?

and how to use an ungapped output trannie instead of a gapped one.
Any extra components to use , how to connect ?
I'm just asking because I have some big Quads overhere.
I wounded some TX years ago, but i never use it. Few months ago i reangered them to act like 200-600 ohm (neve type) and i made a gap between two c cores(just a paper between). Lost some inductance, but works great! Not so easy to find proper paper but few hours of experiment and there you are. Dont know about Quads!? :D
Analog saturation!
Andreas,
Gapped and ungapped transformers are different entities. There's no "trick" that will translate into a virtual gap - unless you run the circuit completely different.
