suggestions for simple in-studio lighting?

I just bought a Sony HVR -Z1N. Planning to do simple in-studio shots of presenter and possible guest w/ simple background. The space is tiny - so prefer small, closely placed lights which aren't too hot (if possible). My studio is pitch black, so I may have to put a little colored fabric in the background? Suggestions?

If budget is a big factor, those incandescent clamp-on lights are sold at hardware stores for around $6USD each. With about $10 worth of PVC pipe, you could make a couple of inverted T shape pieces about 2 meters tall, with a couple of pieces going across to connect them. This would make a stand where you could arrange the clip lights as needed. Throw a white sheet over the whole shebang to soften up the light a little bit.
