Good sounding MultiChannel Mic Pre?

Any opinions or experiece with good 4-8 channel mic pre's? Loookin for anyone who has used the Presonous digimax, focusrite octopre, mackie onyx millenia hv-3d or other multichannel preamps. Im trying to gather some info on the pros/cons of each, and which ones will give the best sound. Any help, ideas, input is greatly appreciated!

Hey Gib -

I don't mean to be critical, but you're not going to get a useful answer with a vague question like that. Furthermore, if you do a search, you'll find numerous discussions on all of the hardware you mentioned.

The range of hardware you provide is similar to asking about peoples thoughts on cars ranging from a Geo Metro to a Lexus. It just doesn't make sense.

Perhaps you could tell us what it is you're looking for and what you'll be recording with it. Other useful information would be things like...what mics you'll be hooking up to it, what kind of conversion you'll be using (if any), what existing hardware you'll be using, the kind of music, etc.

The reason I asked the question in the format that I did, is because I have already read about most if not all of these pieces of gear. In addition I have used both the Millenia HV-3D, and the presonous digimax. Also the range of music going to be recorded by any of the above devices will be vast. The mics I am going to be using in front of the preamps is not yet decided upon. All I can say right now is that it will be converted, using a Motu HD-192 interface then from there into Logic 7 on a Mac G5.

I wanted to just ask what other peoples experiences were on these pres, no matter what and how they used them. ALL input is valuable no matter what. and just hearing from other people what they think might help me decide if what I am thinking is accurate or not.

If you're looking for uncolored, top end stuff, consider Grace Designs. The m802 is about the best there is out there, and it can also work with a remote, sold as an accessory. There is also a ribbon mic feature now, as well, so you've got all bases covered. It won't make anything "phat" or hot or whatever, just clean, with lots of level.

the focusrite ISA428 is a really nice piece of gear too. Very warm.

Screw all of the inexpensive and boutiquey stuff. Give me an 8 pack of API and/or Neve preamps, in any flavor or variety. I don't want clean and transparent. I want color and lots of it. Lots of iron and simple topography circuits. Six transistors is all you need to get your microphone into your computer.

I recently got a focusrite Red-1 and it is quickly becoming one of my go to pre's for lots of tasks. Consider it....you'll be glad you did.

Thanks for the link. Looks really cool. I'm assuming you can testify to the sound quality of these? Anyone else gone this route? I'd really like to hear more about this. I do know a decent amount about electronics and circuitry but havent ever done soldering of this type. Maybe I could practice up on some other things while I save some money for some of these.
