My friend has a Mackie 32:8 that he wants to use to use for his recording studio. I'm not a recording engineer; I’m a PC tech. He asked me to find a way to record on his pc from his Mackie board.
Do I need to get him a special sound card or interface card? Is there a USB interface he can use? What software would you recommend?
He would like to keep the cost reasonable but any suggestions will be appreciated. |

How many tracks does he need to record at one time? U will a need a sound card and software.
M-audio makes a lot of cheaper cards, some USB some PCI.
MOTU is another good cheaper card.
Software wise Cubase is pretty inexpensive, also there are few free daws out there like

But it greatly depends on how many track he wants to record at one time. |

The most used method on this mixer is to tap the signal from the 8 busses. If he only needs 8 channels at the time you can buy a regular 8channel AD/DA converter. Could be anything realy, motu, m-audio, presonus are just some brands.
If he only needs 8 channels, then you can set up a permanent taping from the 8 busses and he can just rout the channels to the busses as he goes along. If he needs more he need to tap the signal from each channels insert point or line out..
Just random thoughts now as Im working the night shift. but i hope you can use some of it. |
