I am in the process of building a sand filled concrete block garage for my home recoding studio, my brick layer has offered to lay a second layer(leaf) of sand filled concrete blocks for the internal walls of the studio my question is would this be a better method of isolating sound than using a studwall with RC2 and two layers of gyprock?
if I do what the Bricklayer is offering the two leaf wall construction will be
as below
140 mm sand filled blocks external render finish
100mm airspace filled with insulation batts
90mm sandfilled block
internal gyprock or render finish??
any advice would be great!
cheers |

The problem I see is that you are still going to have to have a stud wall if you plan on insulating to hold heat in or out of the building. |

Yeah maybe, but ah, I haven't fully understood this line yet.

SpaceI am saying is that the walls are made of concrete block eg. besser blocks or masonary block
No stud wall will be used just brick piers and the insulation is for it sound reduction not for heat
cheers! |

It reads like you are developing a dual purpose room...a garage that will also be a recording environment...that is what I keep getting out of it. Seems that by sheer density alone two filled block walls would be better then one block wall, with an added stud filled double rocked wall. It seems that way, but several things can alter the ability of the two block walls to contain sound.
Block is a porous product and can soak up water, if it can soak up water it can allow sound to penetrate. Before I started the second wall I would use a "blockbond" or oil paint to cover the whole inside of the first(exterior) wall, blockbond or plaster being recommended. Of course if the outside of this wall is in the elements of nature, I would treat it as well.
If that second block wall is to be constructed and it sits on top of the same slab/footer that the first/exterior wall sits on vibration can be transferred from inside to outside.
If in the construction of the second/interior block wall any mortar is allowed to pile up and bridge between inside and outside walls, the ability of this dual wall system to isolate sound is compromised.
A lot of factors can inhibit this system from working, careful design and overbearing supervision of the block laying process from a meticulous block layer could eliminate concern and error. |

Thanks for the great info space!!
I will take it into consideration.
Iand what I ment was that it is a recording /rehearsal studio. I use the word garage just as the description of the type of building it is.
sorry fo the confusion
Cheers! |
