Hey everyone, ive been hanging around these forums for a while and i decided instead of trolling to find the answers i want. I would just ask !

Anyway's, right now i am in the process of purchasing a pair of studio monitors. I would like your thoughts and opinions on the following.

Choice 1 Tannoy Reveal Active 5's
Choice 2 Tannoy Reveal Passive 6's
Choice 3 Tannoy Reveal Passive 8's

All of which are the old style with black drivers. I would plan to power the passive's with a samson servo PA, but if you have any recommendations towards that feel free to tell.

My Environment is a small project studio, so im debating on whether or not the 8's would be overkill. let me know ! thanks.

No specific comments about the Tannoy's your looking at but if your looking to get full range monitoring capability, you will likely need an 8" woofer as the 5" and 6" just don't seem to get you there no matter who makes the monitor.

Why just Tannoys? Is it that you like their sound, or are these particular ones available to you at an advantageous price? There are lots of other nearfield monitors, both active and passive, in a similar price range.

Well they seem to have gotten great praise here, and are of a good price range for me.

What are some others you would recommend ?

i've got the original reveal actives here and i love them ... although there are times i wish i had a sub... my only concern is that samson amp... not generally wanting to bash samson but those amps have serious issues IMO... i used to have to work on them.. i'ld rather see an adcom or nad or hafler if you can find one.... the low end of the "pro" market is only made "pro" by the lettering IMO... and even a mid grade audiofool piece will blow the doors of that sampson....

Tannoys are awesome. I have always worked in the mindset that you will be growing. Either in project size and quantity, or at the very least, your knowledge in the field. That being said, I would go with the larger of your options, if you can afford it. The smaller ones may leave you wanting much more from your monitors in the future.

dementedchord is 100% right about the samson. I have delt with these crappy amps in the live field and in the studio. I personally haven't found anything made by Samson that is worth the headache you get along with the low price. Finding an amp with no fan (if your amp is in the room with you) was the hardest thing about perfecting my passive monitor chain. I still don't think I have the right amp to be powering my passive monitors. But I wasn't afforded too many options in my choice.

In the end, keep in mind that your monitor chain is what you are using to hear what is going on in your mix. It is super important that you keep this signal chain as true to the real audio as possible.
