COME ON!!!
You and I both know its not anything like that simple. Stevie had a LOT of things that contributed to his sound. Yes, a Strat....an OLD Strat...with a lot of MOJO in it.
If you have never played an old Strat, Les Paul, 335, Tele, etc...then you cant really know what it is about them thats different than all the repro's ,the custom-builts, the specialty guitars, the average standard guitar.
It aint the same.
Pieces have to age. Parts have to be played till they're ....errr....ripe. Wood has to dry and dry and dry.......Windings in the pickups have to have lots and lots of smoke and beer interlaced into them....
THEN....you have to have Stevie Rays BRAIN!
And fingers.
And practice for hours and hours and hours...........
THEN....you have to have a bunch of tube amps. Different ones. A Fender Super-Reverb, a Dumble, an old Twin, maybe even a VibroVerb and a tweed Champ.
THEN....you gotta be able to handle a set of strings that start with a .013. And be able to BEND them.
AND...you have to borrow from the greatest old blues guys that ever showed up on this planet....Not only do you 'borrow', you 'enhance'....
Stevie Rays sound is all about what he does. Study his patterns. Get where hes coming from. Get an old Strat and a Super and have a great rockin bluesy time.
But dont ever think its going to be SIMPLE. |

Daves onto something. You need to have Stevies brain.
Don't forget to tune down a half step so you can bend those strings, and also throw some 6100 Dunlops on that old wood like Stevie had. |

Picking apart Stevie's gear aint gonna get you much closer to sounding like Stevie. Stevie used all kinds of amps, and had lots of guitars, but no matter what gear he played through, he always sounded like Stevie. It's all in the hands. It's all in the hands. |
