Hello all. I am in the research stage of building a studio for medium budget, mostly acoustic recordings (acos guitar, vocals, upright bass, drums, fiddle, mandolin, dobro, etc..). I have a house I want to convert into a studio. Big problem....pier and beam. The sole purpuse of the house would be for recording only. The house does have an attached garage with a slab foundation. The total sq. feet is about 1000. 8.5 ft ceilings. 1 car garage has a 12 foot ceiling. My budget is 10,000. |

Not up on all the pier and beam construction problems but simply building a room within a room should solve any problems and should be well within your budget. Am I missing something. We don't use pier and beam construction much in the Northern US. |

I am sorry - but in that size range I cannot see you even coming close to buying the materials for a low budget studio @ 10 per square foot.
As far as the other question goes - please be more explicit - I cannot picture what your issues are?

What would be a realistic $/square foot budget? If I am able to increase my budget would it be possble to isolate an upright bass from an acoustic guitar and both from the control room? The pier and beam foundation seems impossble to deal with (especially with bass frequencies). I feel like I could isolate the drums enough by using the garage for a drum booth, my hack guess. Rod, I bought your 'Build it Like the Pros' book yesterday and have read up through the floors section. I love the book. Is building a studio inside of a pier and beam house even worth pursuing?? Does anyone have any input? please....... |

Well... depends on how good you are a DIY and how complex you make it.
I'd say a realistic budget would be $40-$65/Sq Ft, if you can do 1/3 of it yourself... otherwise $110/Sq Ft is the national average for commercial space. |

Ok, thanks. So with that in mind, does anyone know how to get room to room isolation on this pier and beam foundation? It's the bass stuff that I am most concerned with, I think...Thanks guys. |

Yes - how it is currently - and what you want to do with it - a building section through the floor would be nice as well.
