What are the pros/cons to using an off the shelp supply - for example the ones availble from PowerOne - versus your own DIY supply. Would using a UL certified PS automatically make your project UL certified (I would suspect not).

    Thanks - John

It won't. And your DIY-project won't need to either, unless you're producing for sale.

Main reason to use ready-built supplies will be if you need a special PSU - like high-current for a large mixing desk - you may as well benefit from specialized companys know-how.

But for all small-to-mid sized PSU's, there's no reason not to DIY - the PSU is not a complicated part.

FWIW, I think those power one suppplies sound terrible, really stiff. If you use them, try a different supply and you might be suprised to hear a difference. I know I was...

MOTM Modulars use a PowerOne supply so I had one in there (in the process of selling that system). I also picked up another one around the same time because I found one cheap - this particular one is really big and really heavy so I don't anticipate using it for anything - it'll go on EBay at some point - it's a HDD15-5-A Dual Output (+/-15V @ 5A) if anyone is interested.

Dave, what do you think makes them sound bad? Too heavy duty and thus no sag/compression?

Im really way too ignorant about electronics to start guessing at what makes them sound bad, or at least leads gear hooked up to them to sound bad in my control room. All I know is that I used power ones on my projects and then got some averill neves which came with a power one and they did not have the usual depth I was accostomed to with neve modules, so I swapped the supply with something a friend built for me and the difference was night and day. after that I slowly started to change out the power ones and always noticed a difference- preamps just seemed to feel smaller and stiffer when run from a power one.
