    Hi everyone,

I'd like to start out here thanking you for all the information you have provided.

I'm wiring my new rack today, and had a question about using an Edac connctor.

Can I tie the screens from multiple lines to one pin? As in 24 line outs from my interface to my console. If I trie several screens together, I can fit 24 lines in one connector. I would end up carring 8 pins with the screen connection.

    Thanks,

    jnJ

I've had to do things like that before, it worked for me but I guess there could be situations where it wouldn't work, maybe do the first few and listen for any hum etc probs.
This may not apply to you jnj , but.
A couple of obvious things about edacs I learned the hard way; you can solder the pin and then insert it if you're starting with a new edac (m'barrassing admission) or have an extraction tool. (anyone know a DIY bodge for this?)
You can put on the whole cover assembly after it's all been soldered (or crimped).
These lessons took so long to learn cause I was always fiddling with old ones........

Thanks for the reply. I bought new so I am doing the assemly after soldering.

In my manual. my boards big brother edac schem had all the screens tied at the connector. But they also had a pin for each screen. I just thought maybe there might be a problem whith current density per pin or some such thing.

    Thanks again,
    jnJ

There shouldn't be a problem at all if all the screens are tied at the console input, 8 pins will be plenty IMO.

I have had bad luck with soldering EDAC pins. If you plan on doing more than a few of them consider getting a crimp tool. There're not cheap. The extra strain relief you get with the crimp pin helps a lot. It's a tight fit to get everything in there. If you want the outer jacket of the multipair to sit in the cable clamps the length of the pairs at the bottom of the connector is very short. This means you have to bend the wire to seat it in the connector. It's easy to break a brittle solder connection this way. Then your wire is too short and you're f***ed.
