hi all,
what pot cleaner is the best to use, i've tried IPA spray, careclean, some other servisol gear,
i'm trying to clean the fader pots on a trident tsm eq, but i also need the spray to have some lubricating action to keep the pots from scratching. is there a specific pot cleaner, or should i blast them with IPA, and then with some WD40 ?
in where i work, i normally use castrol careclean, but is this a bit strong a chemical to use ?
any info would be great

Kontakt Chemie - Kontakt 600 "tuner" for cleaning, Kontakt 60 for a bit of lubricating.

Or - if you can get it - EuroQuem "Dare Special". This is a very good cleaner.

btw, I don't think you'll need any lubrication for cleaning faders. If they need mechanical lubrication, use vaseline for that.

In my early days I used som universal oil to clean and lubricate the old pots in my 60' bass amp.
It worked good and still works today but I think that next time I will read on the bottle to see if there's anything in it that can distroy the pot.

Years ago in another life an amp tech told me WD-40 conducts electricity. I've never been able to confirm or deny that, but he was right about so many other things. So I took his word for fact. If anyone has data to the contrary, please share.

Until then, you might want to be careful spraying wd-40; you could turn a pot into a short.

Don't use WD40!! My current favourite is Deoxit D5 from Caig Labs, works a treat, worked very well on some '70s AB pots recently, they sound and feel like new.

The best cleaner I've used was a Philips cleaner, but I can't get it in Blighty any more, any overseas folk know where it can be found?

DeOxit D5 is fabulous for rotary pots, but don't use it in faders. It wrecks them. I speak from experience.

Deoxitt can ruin pots too....from experience; it seems to break down the lubricant in the pot making it succeptible to seizing. I've had bad luck with it on 'sealed' pots, but I bet it works fairly well on the open types.

First, make sure that your pots actually are scratchy, and that it's not DC leaking into the pot from a failed/leaky coupling cap upstream. Next, exercise the pot...push the dust and dirt to the ends of the travel, that can make it useable for a while.

My current attitude is to replace pots once they become scratchy.

Cheers,

Kris

Can anyone explain why D5 trashes faders but not pots? I would have thought they are the same thing, difference being that one has a circular track and other a straight track.

I've trashed some expensive faders with Electrolube...Having said that I know engineers that recommend the stuff, so it seems everyone has their own experience and opinion on this issue. What was it Dirty Harry said?
