Hi, I need comments to my narrowed down selection below, in preference order:
1. Beyer Dynamic DT 770 PRO, 80 ohm
2. Audio Technica ATH-M50
3. Sony MDR 7506

I've chosen fully closed ones, as I work off my appartment with people sometimes bumping a bit upstairs and some traffic noise from the outdoors.
I'll need to be able to partly mix with the headset, as obviously I won't always be able to work well enough with monitors.

The ATH-M50 reportedly has very few artefacts, and is long-term comfi.
The Sony is said to have a big button (often desirable by bass players and drummers) and maybe being almost too clear in the treble.

The very comfortable (to my head) DT 770 PRO exibits 18 dB damping, the 'm' version, marketed for drummers, does 35dB.
I haven't found a real good explanation to the sonic difference between the 80 and 250 ohm models. Likewise between DT-770 and the 'm' version, except that the m-version may have more of a 'big buttom'.
I realize the 990 model is a decent improvement, but alas, it's not a closed type.

vansinn:
I also need to use headphones while working on a project....I have both the ATH-M50 and the Sony MDR 7506.
I like both of them...but they each have there own sound.
The ATH-M50's have much more low end than the Sony's...but they both have very good overall response in the mid/higher ranges. Of course, I think most headphones in that caliber have good response mid high but low end seems to be lacking in the Sony.
I do like using the Sony's for general listening and comparisons but I use the AT's for checking bass and kick drum low end stuff now...Sony does have a newer 7508? I think but io haven't tried them
I would try all of your choices if possible....or maybe buy a pair of each....!

Thanks. Your comments about the ATH-M50 falls in place with what's reported on the rec.audio.pro NG.

(Ty Ford's useful comparison schemo, which can be found through google groups, says 'Bass with midrange clarity')

However, the Sony wasn't referred to lack bass; dunno if your observation may be related to your headphone preamp, emaning I have no idea as to how demanding the Sony is WRT the preamp's ability to source current..

I'm still mostly interested in the DT-770's..

Quick follow-up: I just got an answer from Beyer Dynamic, saying that the DT-770m has "..less low-frequencies and less sensitivity in the mid and high frequency range. Again:
- DT 770 PRO was developed for the sound.
- DT 770 M was developed for the isolation of ambient noise"

While I would have liked practical feedback from users of these, I'm satisfied with BD's comments. DT-770 Pro it will be.
