I'm assuming this is set up is going to sound way better than Presonus firepod I've been using. I was just wondering if anybody has any experience with any of these pieces of gear? I did a search, but I couldn't find anything really good. I know I'm going to have to learn how to use Pro Tools, but I've heard it's very user friendly.. so we'll see!
If you want to check out some recordings I did with the firepod go here... http://www.myspace.com/cprrock
Thanks! |

What was wrong with the Firepod? I understand that you might want to add the Digi for compatibility's sake but better is more relative to how you use the gear than what gear you're using.
Listening to your songs, I think there's a lot of potential to what you've already done but the mixes sound muddy to me. That has nothing to do with the gear. I doubt that using the Digi and RNC is going to make any difference to that. The 002R has 2 Pres? So with the RNP you have an additional 2 right?
Anyway, I really liked the tunes. Just work on the mix a bit more. The ideas are great and the songs are solid, so that's 90% of the battle. The rest is just nitpicking. |

I have all three pieces of gear and like them a lot. The (four) digi pres are in the general "not terrible cheap pre" category. Don't push them hard and you'll be OK. The RNP is a step up. More headroom and the top end is smoother. The RNC is a good sounding compressor. I use it live all the time, but I don't use it much for recording since I like the control of adding compression in the box.
Unfortunately, I doubt you are going to have any sort of epiphany when you plug them all in. I agree with the previous post - these differences are very small compared to the human side of the equation. If you have a good song, good performance, good recording technique, good mixing then low quality equipment will be fine as long as it works. It you don't have the human stuff then a million dollar studio isn't going to help.
To me the best feature of PT is that there is so much tutorial support for it. The one I've liked best is Keane's book/CD. But I have not tried them all and you may find one that looks better to you. A good book can push you way up the learning curve in a weekend. Not only will you learn all the bells and whistles and key strokes of PT quickly, you'll learn mixing and editing techniques. That will do a lot more for your recordings than the difference between some inexpensive pres. |

The 002R has 4 pres and yes the RNP will give me an additional 2. Do you have any advice on how I can get some of that mud out of the mix? I'm not entirely sure of a good way to do that. Any advice would be appreciated. |
